GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

Nebbermind:
Hi nebbermind, i didnt realised there is only ONE girls GE school in Singapore  DD took her GEP tests 3 yrs ago and I didnt ask how many eventually of her cohort got selected but among she and her 3 best friends then (all from top class), only 1 was selected.OrangeJuice:
yes i am surprised by the number too, DS is not from GE school, he is from a co-ed neighbourhood school. Just a note, DD (from a GE girls school) sat for her GEP tests 3 yrs ago and many qualified for round 2 too, but only a handful was eventually selected for GEP class.
There is only ONE GE girls school!!
anyway, heard it's like 20~30 yrly who will get into GEP from this GE girls school. Is it true, or more??
I dont prepare my kids for GEP tests, if they are really gifted, they will get in, if not it is fine with me too. Based on my observation on the GE kids from DD's school, I guess they are not really proud or what,I think due to their different curriculum and academic text, they are often \"kept away\" from the mainstream. Like the girl who was selected among DD's gang of 4, she eventually drifted apart from the other 3 cos she was in a different class and they do different stuff, so hard to \"click\".
There is good and bac abt GEP, the GEPers are more challenged but i heard they have lots of projects to do. If they do well, grades may come in handy when trying for DSA at P6 but then again, I have also heard stories of GEPers who didnt do well for PSLE. The top PSLE in DD's school last yr was from mainstream class not GEP class. Just to share above here

For my DS's school, a few of the mainstreamers from top class called the GEPers Stupid! So who is the proud & arrogant ones? I guess there bounds to b black sheep in everywhere so cannot take it to heart lah.

Mainstreamer DS1 told me last time they dislike the GE class pupils and purposely not played with them, they even called them GEP nerds. But the situation has improved nowadays which is after they implement mix lessons with mainstreamers. -

That's so sad. The kids may be smart academically, but they're still children and they need our guidance in respect, discipline, compassion, humility, integrity and so many other aspects of life. I think when a parent relinquishes his/her duty, the kid is in trouble. Especially smart kids who think they're better than other people.
Recently, we met up with an old friend whose 2 sons got into the GEP program in a prestigious boy's school. We were happy for her, and she was very proud of their achievements. When the boys came back home, we were shocked by the language and condescending tone they used on their mother. All the mother did was to acknowledge their coming home, and asked a few routine 'small talk' questions.
Once they were out of earshot, I asked my friend why she allowed her tweens to get away with it. She told me that in school they are taught to speak up for themselves and be confident. They are leaders! She didn't want to contradict what the school is teaching.
:siao:
In this case, I don't fault the school but I pity the misguided parents. Some are so proud and in awe of the program or of their children that they relinquish their parental control ie family values and discipline. I have heard parents say that they themselves would never make the grade. Their children who made the cut are 'smarter' and 'know better'. So who are they to put their children down.
So sad. Most of these children may be smart but they are still children. They may have the brains, but we still need to nurture and guide them. The boys will likely develop into thoughtless and heartless leaders. You heartlanders out there who don't measure up, beware!! :yikes:
Academic smarts can't make up for life experiences and that's what we can share with our kids. As my grandmother used to say, she's eaten more salt than we've eaten rice. She may not have had much education but I sure learnt a lot from her. -
Hi Parents,
Are the GEP selection test rigorous enough to select only the gifted?
My child is worried that he may barely pass the test or he may pass mainly due to luck.
He did not welcome the idea of being the bottom few in the class.
He is worried that working on projects will neglect his studies.
He feels unsure that he is able to maintain an average score of 75% up to PSLE for DSA purposes.
Although we know that he is more a high-ability student than a gifted one, it worries me that he may get in if this yearβs GEP cohort size is not as strong as other years. Is the COP to enter GEP based on a passing score or the performance of the peers ie a % of the population? It also worries me that we may undermine his abilities/potential and at the same time, we/he feel that he may not be GEP material.
I told him to just take the test easy, but am still worried about being lucky. Should we just skip the selection test?
Anyone here passed the second round but did not take up the GEP offer? -
