Tharman : we must welcome talent from abroad to create and sustain good jobs
Today newspaper
He added: “We must tread a balanced
path in our manpower policies. Our
economy must remain welcoming to both
businesses and talent from abroad, so as
to create and sustain good jobs … We will
at the same time seek to keep the overall
share of foreigners in the workforce at no
higher than one-third over the long term.”
On older workers, Mr Tharman noted
that the Retirement and Re-employment Act
will come into effect in January next year.
“We will also assist companies to recruit,
retain and re-employ older workers, with
outreach and incentives to redesign jobs and
work arrangements to suit the needs and
preferences of an older workforce.”
what is your view on this?
Don't understand why we keep beating this dead horse.
Singapore based companies will hire Singaporeans if there are enough Singaporeans to be hired at the right skills level and at the right cost level that will enable us to be competitive globally. Where there are new industries for which there are fewer Singaporeans with the requisite skills set, there will necessarily be a start-up stage where foreigners will need to be recruited.
It's a really simple equation.
There is also a very simple solution/outcome to promoting \"Singaporeans first\" in jobs.
Close the borders, accept slower growth, accept that some industries will pass us by, accept that some of our best and brightest (that you spend so much angst to educate in our school system) will have to leave our country to find the right type of employment. Accept gradual decay of our economic competitiveness.
Very simple. -

3Boys, I think the reason why we keep beating this dead horse is because we are actually talking about people who are still alive and struggling to remain so. When people still hubs on this, it shows the argument isn't convincing them. -
Concern2, that’s quite true. If the topic is always the same, that means people are still not convinced. My Myanmar colleague who is a PR told me that it was super easy to get PR. Just work for 2 years in Singapore and you are granted PR regardless of your work scope, your position, your contribution, your whatever. I wished he would wipe off that smug look. I know he is very pleased with the government here.

Kenneth Lim,73, charged for making false statement under empolyment act and faces 60 charges of phantom worker scam. -- ST PHOTO: AZIZ HUSSIN
Construction firm boss Kenneth Lim Ong Long padded his list of local employees with bogus workers so as to be eligible to recruit more foreigners. The 73-year-old would then collect $6,000 for each of the 30 Chinese nationals he hired last year.

you don't need two years to get PR in US, Canada, OZ ...... in fact for US, whole family gets citizenship within 24 months -
I usually get irritated and angry silently whenever i heard malaysian (not a PR yet) gets an admin assistant job in SGP. For instance admin assistant to a dental clinic. Come on, i don’t believe no singaporean aunty or SAHM (wanting part time) to fill in this position.
Sometime this company purposely get a foreigner is because no CPF and plus the salary is lower. So let’s be realistic, who does not want to pay low salary as an employer. No need to threaten singaporean about losing competitiveness if there is no foreign talent.
To me having a foreigner to fill in as admin assistant is really so much about foreign "talent".
Today, the use of foreign talent is too loosely interpreted. If it is truly talent, then of course i will be obliging and accept it. But a superficial "talent", of which i cannot accept. -

it is just another foreign worker by any other terminology.....be it CEO or bus 'captain' or janitor (aka Director of Toilet Health), etc etc -

I don't think so. Some years ago, my friend had to marry her American boyfriend to get a green card (PR status). She recently became a citizen.peapot:

According to the Internet, citizenship will only be granted if the family has lived in the US for five years. If married to a US citizen, the time period will be shortened to three years. -
Hmm…
think about it…
If SGporeans dun want certain jobs, then how?
Raise the salary levels of these jobs to make it worth the SGporeans worth their time and effort…
This also creates costs, which inadvertedly gets passed on to the consumers… and creates more inflation.
IMHO, either way out, will see huge inflation coming, if not already started.
Better brace yourselves proper.
An example is that of Australia, no foreign workers, all must be PR at the minimum… their inflation can be really high, but everything else also keeps up. The upside for them is that thye have hard commodities and resources, things that SG does not have. So, in a way, we belittle ourselves to remain competitive… in that sense, "we" will accept inflation in exchange for economic growth.
On the other end of the scale, using foreigners is an easy way out… really… cos their base cost of living in SG is much lower than SGporeans who have families planted here and no where to repatriate funds or ourselves. Has anyone calculated your base cost of expenses per month? Imagine if you were alone here, or with your spouse, in SG… your base cost of expenditures would be much lower, particularly if you repatriate funds to home in another country.
To answer this question is almost impossible… to balance it is perhaps the approach taken. Outcome seems clear to me…
What about you?
