Looking for better 2nd & 3rd tier Secondary Schools

Banding gives an idea of the value added by the school. If you have weaker students entering at PSLE who end up performing at Band 2 level, then I say that's a better school than one who takes in stronger students and ends up performing at Band 2.

It is difficult to define whether a school is \"good\" or \"no good\". Different people have different definition and what we think may not be the same as yours.

When I choose schools for my nephews in the past, there are few factors which i will consider. Their PSLE scores are around 200, hence there isn't much choice to choose from.

1) Banding of the school. Whether they are able to produce good O/NA/NT results even though they take in students with low PSLE score. I don't expect 100% pass or handful students scoring 8A1s/9A1s. What I am looking for are schools that have at least 90% 5 'O' level passes.

2) How flexible the schools offer when come to Sec 2 streaming. I prefer schools that allow students to choose the subjects they like. Some schools restrict what the students can study and I will avoid such schools.

3) What programmes (outside normal curriculum) the schools offer to the students, whether they are from Express, NA or NT.

4) What CCA my nephews want and whether the school offer it, and how good is that CCA in the school. Eg. One of my nephew likes drama, hence I choose a school which is not near our house, but has done well in Drama. For the 4 years there, the students has done well in their drama cca during SYF, and the school awarded the students by sending them trips to Sydney and London !! I am surprised as I thought such trips can only happen in the elite schools.

5) Number of express classes. I prefer schools with at leasst 4 express classes. If the school has only 1 or 2 express classes, I won't choose it.

I don't think any school will have good culture. Any school will has its own \"problematic students\". As a parent, you must teach your child to be smart, to mix with the right group of friends, and to avoid those who are problematic.

I may not have answer your question, but I hope you can think through what factors you are looking for when choosing a school. The list will be useful to you to decide which are the schools that are suitable for your child.

Have you considered those a little bit further like Compassvale (COP 214 Band 7), Holy Innocents High (COP 218, Band 8), Pierce Sec (COP 208, Band 8)? Schools with banding shows they have produced \"O\" Level results of certain standard, so you should take this into consideration.

It may not be 100% accurate but i look at the current class timetable/exam timetable to check how many sec 1 classes they have, what subjects offer in sec 3.

Do note that what the schools offer this year may not be the same next year.

You can also visit the schools during their Open House to find out more. Nowsdays schools are more open to share with parents on what the schools can offer.

Anyone has feedback on West : Hua Yi & Yuan Ching Secondary?

It is important besides looking at the plain cutoff point, we need to look at the Secondary school’s banding. If a Secondary school with a lower PSLE cutoff point, then end up having the banding better than another school who had stronger PSLE corhort, it shows that the school is able to groom the children of a certain PSLE caliber to attain a higher level than another comparable school of similar or better PSLE quality.


For eg, the last i checked, Tanjong Katong Sec school vs Chung Cheng, I think the cutoff for chung cheng was higher, but if I’m not wrong, tanjong katong secondary school’s banding (band 2) was better than Chung Cheng (band 3). Such statistics is very telling on what is the quality and how the secondary school groom the students.
