For many years I was a firm believer that there is no cure to Rhinitis and I just have to learn how to live with it (as told by my ENT doctor), but now I strongly feel that such saying should be overthrown!

I would like to share with the readers of this forum about my experience in treating Rhinitis, and hope to spread the good news to all patients who are suffering from such illness.

I’m now at my late 30s and a mother of two. Since my teen age years I have been diagnosed with Rhinitis by the ENT specialist at SGH. I had to apply the Nasal Spray to my nose twice a day, otherwise I would suffer from symptoms such as runny nose, continuous sneezing, blocked nose, headache, throat infection, fever, cough etc. I have been doing the same thing (apply nasal spray 2 times a day) for over 20 years, yet my nose did not get any better. Over the years, the nasal spray became less and less effective on me and sometimes I had to take Zyrtec twice a day plus Chlorpheniramine up to 4 times a day. In fact my condition got worst in recent years, as I was hardly able to breathe through my nose, due to over swelling of nasal polyps and crooked nasal septum, and my sense of smell deteriorated badly; I was in deep despair and thought that there was no more option for me except to go for nose surgery.

As I was contemplating about the surgery, I happened to find out from the TCM clinic at Havelock road which I brought my two daughters for xiao er tuina, that they have a special treatment program for Rhinitis. Since it’s supposed to be natural, safer and less costly as compared to ENT’s treatment/surgery, I decided to give it a try.

It was a 4 months intensive treatment program which consists of acupuncture cum herbal steaming for the nose, without oral medication. The full treatment was split into 3 courses with the use of various herbal formulations for nose steaming in accordance to the treatment progress. Course 1 was supposed to cleanse nasal cavity and clear inflammation, Course 2 to heal nasal mucous membrane and reduce sensitivity towards allergens, Course 3 to enhance immune system and for rehabilitation of nose’s function. The clinic provided me with a steam vaporizer device to do the nose steaming at home on a daily basis, while the acupuncture was carried out either once or twice weekly at the clinic.

I must say that the treatment was a rather long process and required quite a bit of discipline and determination, but however the result was very rewarding! Just only one week into the treatment, I no longer required using Nasal Spray or other western medicines such as Zyrtec, Chlorpheniramine etc., as most of my previous symptoms were put under control. I was surprised with the efficacy of the treatment and was thus motivated to continue the treatment diligently!

It has been almost one year now since I completed the full treatment, touch wood there isn’t any recurring of my rhinitis (only slight sneezing occasionally), neither do I experience any kind of side effects. I can breathe normal, sleep better, regained my sense of smell, and feel much healthier now! Finally after a long while in my life I’m able to live free of any medication, be it TCM or Western drugs. Even during the 7th month and at times when the haze was bad, my nose was still not giving me any problem. I therefore strongly recommend this treatment to those who are suffering from such illness and desperately looking for a good solution.

It may not be too scientific to some peoples on how TCM treatment works, but the TCM doctor who treated me was very professional and experienced, and most importantly my 20 years of chronic rhinitis is now HISTORY!

I consider myself cured by this TCM treatment and therefore I do not agree if anybody would to say “Rhinitis cannot be cured”!

I agree to the comment made by \"Healthyy\" on the treatment of Rhinitis.
I suffered from allergic rhinitis for over 10 years, my nose was particularly sensitive to dust, haze, and sudden change of weather, and I was prone to throat infection due to post nasal drip.

I've tried many ways to combat my nose allergies, including taking western medicines, Chinese medicines, Herbal remedies and using air sanitizer to cleanse the air in my room, but nothing seemed to work for me. And i continued to experience runny nose, sneezing and blocked nose.

I finally had the opportunity to take up the Nose Spa treatment for rhinitis at Herbal-Basic Clinic last December and completed the full treatment courses in April this year. Since then, I no longer experience allergic reaction to dust, smoke, haze etc. (except occasionally sneezing at times), and the sudden change of weather didn't bother me anymore.

I'm not sure if it's right to say that i'm completely cured now, as it was only 6 months since I completed the treatment, but so far I'm pretty satisfied with the result of the treatment, and I'm able to live free of medication. Life has been very different for me ever since my nose was rejuvenated by this treatment.

Incidentally, my 3 sons age 12, 7 & 5 are all diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, even though I didn't put them on the full course treatment but only let them do the Nose Spa therapy once every 1 to 2 week, their condition are pretty much put under control too.

A friend from the Pharmaceutical industry once told me that the efficacies of some herbal medicines has improved by much today, due to technology advancement in the extraction & preparation technique, thus certain illnesses that were previously deemed as “incurable” by western medical definitions, may sometime receive unexpected results from herbal remedies. In my opinion, the Herbal Nose Spa treatment for Rhinitis is perhaps one good example.

My two daughters age 4 and 2.5 were both suffering from allergic rhinitis since young, I had to bring them to see PD every other months due to runny nose, sneeze, cough, respiratory tract infections, swelling tonsil, fever etc.; however, ever since I started the herbal nose spa therapy on them about one year ago, I’m amazed to see the big change in them, as they seldom fall sick anymore and all their allergic symptoms have pretty much reduced too.

I put my thumb up for Herbal Nose Spa, as it is really a good solution for my daughters’ allergic rhinitis! Try it before you conclude that there’s no cure…

                  Hi Kitty2,

I started off with bringing my 2 kids to the clinic to do the herbal nose spa (together with xiao er tuina) for twice a week, then slowly reduced it to once a week. About 3 months later I bought the device and started doing it at home for my kids once every two weeks or so, but now they only need to do it as and when it's needed for \"maintenance\".

I didn't choose or mix the herbs myself, because the clinic I went to has their own proprietary herbal liquid formulations (I think they have 5 kinds of formulations for different purposes), so I just consulted the doctor and purchased the herbal liquid from the clinic, accordingly.

                      Hi Felixbebe

I chanced upon this forum and read with great interest of your sharing of nose spa therapy. My kids encounter sensitive nose since young, thus I am keen to find out more about this treatment.

Understand from western doctor, frequent drinking or eating of hot drinks and food will hurt the throat thus might lead to cancer. With the frequent usage of this nose spa which requires steaming (temperature), does it hurt the nose eventually?

Also, is the medication used is HSA certified?

Sorry that if you happened to receive this mail more then once, as i don’t seem to be able to submit my enquiry previously.

Hope to hear from you soon.

                        Hi,
I'm a regular in kiasuparents and has been reading all posting in this topic
Since someone up there mention about HSA, I would like to say something.

Btw, i has been seeing felizbebe and lilytan keep answering questions post by others. Just curious, is both of you some how related to Herbal Basic TCM? Base on the way both of you reply is very profession and detailed. It really makes me ponder.

Both of you mention that Nose Spa is good and give them a thumb up. If is really that good, why don't they introduce it to Singapore PD and Singapore Hospital? As you know, Singapore government starts to accept and recognise TCM treatment. Like NUH, there is a TCM, SGH and TTS also have TCM. They should publicize it and introduce it to all Singaporean. Since more than 50% of Singaporean has allergic rhinitis problem.

Here comes the charges...I have a few friends visited Herbal Basic TCM. They told me that their charges is very high and in order to treat the allergy the physician suggest to them to take treatment package. And their package is thousand over $$. Also, without package, per treatment is also expensive. Further more the xiao er tui na is not done by the physician yet they still charge so high compare to other TCM.

For those who bring their kids to Herbal Basic TCM, don't you find it expensive?? And can they guarantee that after the whole treatment, the allergic will not occur? If they can't guarantee, isn't it the same as taking chinese herbs? And chinese herbs is not costly. I have two kids age 7 and 4. They have allergic rhinitis as well and theirs condition is under controlled. Further more they don't have to take the chinese herb everyday. Just when their nose feel itch and sneezing, i will give them the chinese herbs. Is so simple.
