Need help for the following questions.

Q1). In a basket, the ratio of the number of apples to the number of oranges to the number of pears is 2:6:7. Express the number of oranges as a fraction of the total number apples and pears in the basket.(Write the fraction in its simplest form)

Q2). Jim has some 50-cent and 20-cent coins. He has less than 65 50-cent coins and more 50-cents coins than 20-cent coins. The total value of the 50-cent coins and 20-cent coins that he has is $43.20. What is the least possible number of 50-cent coins that he has?

Q1: Fraction of apples+ pears = (2+7)/15 = 9/15
Fraction of oranges = 6/15
Oranges / apples+pears = (6/15) / (9/15) = 6/9 = 2/3

Q2: Guess and check:
$0.50______$0.20

62_______61

So least possible number of $0.50 is 62

Hi.

In your Question 1, your question is a little ambiguous. If you want it as a fraction of only the apples and pears, then the answer would be 6/13. If you want it as a fraction of all 3, then the answer is 2/5.

Mrs Lee knitted many scarves for sale. 3/5 of them were black scarves and the rest were white scarves. After selling 120 white scarves and 5/9 of the black scarves, she had 2/5 of the scarves left. How mant scarves did she sell in all?

Total number of scarves = 15 units
black scarves = 9 units
white scarves = 6 units

so, 15 units = black sold + white sold + left
15 units = 5 units + 120 + 6 units
4 units = 120, 1 unit = 30
Sold = 5 units + 120 = 270

Total volume of water in tank A (before)
= Volume of water in Tank A (after) + Volume of water in tank B (after)
= height x (Base Area of A) + height x (Base area of B)

so, 15 units = black sold + white sold + left
15 units = 5 units + 120 + 6 units

Thanks. My son also worked out the answer to be 270 but the answer given is 450. If I work backword for 270, it doesn't seem to be right as 2/5 of the scarves will be 108 and they sold 120 of them. Any explanation? :?

The number of scarves sold is 270.

The total number of scarves Mrs Lee knitted is 450.

Hence , she has 2/5 *450 or 180 white scarves in the beginning.
