All About Preparing For Secondary One

I heard Geography will be a toughie. Should I ask her to read some materials? Haven't bought secondary school textbooks yet because don't know what school she will be posted to. Anyone can advise?

I was the one who started this thread. My kid was massacred by HCL in Sec 1. :yikes:
Ha ha, two years later, I realised that what I should have done was to let her have chinese tuition and to get her to read chinese articles in the newspapers. She got pass for her HCL and \"A\" for her CL in PSLE. Because her T-score was 253, she was qualified to study HCL in Sec 1. Let me tell you, for parents whose kids scored pass in HCL in P6, please be alerted that your kid may not be able to cope with Sec 1 HCL. The china private tuition teacher told me that in Singapore, the HCL standard in P6 is very low, but the HCL standard in Sec 1 is very high. Meaning, it is not a step from P6 to Sec 1. Rather, it is a HIGH jump!! I asked the tuition teacher why my dd couldn't cope when her normal CL got an A. She said A is nothing. Even her student who is an eurasian (meaning non-chinese speaking background) got an A.

Also, my dd was weak in argumentative and non-fiction english writing. She was not exposed to this skill of writing in P6, so she suffered in Sec 1. It would be good to let her read Straits times newspapers and Eng literature books such as Pride and Prejudice instead of letting her read so many Harry Potter and Agatha Christie books.

Thanks, my dd is in sec 2 this year. She has applied for Phy/Chem/Geo/double math combination for next year, we are keeping our fingers crossed that she can get this class next year. Actually I thought PSLE was tough, but secondary school is even more demanding. Such as learning how to cope with double the number of subjects and getting along with her classmates in a new school. Her primary school was co-ed and secondary school is an all girls school. I once asked her what's the difference between studying in a co-ed school and all girls school. She said, \"boys are annoying..but girls..can be bitchy\". Pardon the word, but there's no other descriptive word that can be used interchangeably.

My dd started becoming quiet and reserved since primary 6. Teenagers are so complicated and difficult to understand isn't it. I realised that other than just helping our children in their studies, another important task is to learn how to communicate with them in their growing years. I am not so good at being a friend to my dd. I end up nagging and screaming at her to do her homework, to stop internet surfing, to switch on the light when reading, to hang up the wet towel, to clear her messy table, you get the drift. All these nagging can easily make a teenager retreat into her own private world. I don't really know what she is thinking of or what's bothering her nowadays. I am not sure if you know what I mean. Now, I have signed up for my much delayed facebook account, so that I can have her add me as a friend. Gotta start somewhere, right? :boogie:

Hi cyndilauper,

Your dd must be good in Math. That's the impression I have of a Physics/Chem/Double Math combi. I have this idea that girls much prefer Bio to Physics. I think Upper Sec's going to be another leap in their learning journey.

I know what you mean about boys being annoying and girls being .... And all that nagging is probably the bane of all mums of teenagers too. You are not alone. :hi5:

Though i am a student, i think sec schs still won't allow your child into the school. Only Primary schools i think....
But it depends how is your child scoring. If score is okay, guess you won't donate to the school for admission, right?

My friend (FT)'s daughter got in one of the neighborhood schools without donation, just through MOE examination (twice per year)
I think, the topic of donation is excluded in MOE chapter.Should be careful.

You can read the following link. The entrance of secondary exam has just finished (13/10/11). The coming exam will be February 2012.
