GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

Hi, the question was the same as last year. My dd told me the same question last year 2010.

After the test, my ds said he totally forgot the question. But today he suddenly told me two interesting questions, one is if chilly is sweets, lemon tastes sour, then chilly should be ? another is if dragon tells joke, knight is protecting, then dragon is?

He also give the difficult level general ability2<english<general1<math

I remembered last year my dd brought back the yellow envelope before school holiday.

according to MOE 2011 release schedule, invitation offer to join GEP programme come out only around end November:-

based on past historical trend - out of entire SG students population cohort, top 1% GEP offer usually more boys are offered. Out of 500 - rough estimate say, approximately around 350 boys, 150 girls thereabout.

My DD was in GEP from 20008 to 2010. To qualify among the top 1 % of P3 cohort, I believe the students must be way above the rest in terms of numeracy and language skills.

What I find hard to believe in some of this posting here is the presumption that GEPers can be strong in Maths but can be \"extremely poor\" in english. I thjink it is totally out of proportion. One of the subject that GEPers do is social studies (SS) and portfolio presentation. I don't believe the parents who mentioned above want to lie which I dont see any benefits that they will gain by doing so.

By implying others are liars, either you are a born rude & proud person or you have a low EQ. And I believe nobody wants to belittle your dd and any GEPers.

I agree with you that it's not easy to get in to GEP classes and those students who were selected are definitely good in both Eng & Maths. And those who got in based on \"pure luck\" could be very rare. Ultimately, they will struggle in the GEP classes unless they have shown potential to progress well.

I also disagree with those parents who spend money, time & efforts to specifically trained their kids for GEP exam. And I pity these kids.

I also don’t agree to sending children for training in GEP. If they’re talented, they’ll be in. I don’t wish to see my son struggle through if he’s not up to the calibre.


My son got through the 1st round, whatever the results is for the 2nd round, I’ll just accept it. If he got through it, of course, I’ll be very happy. If cannot, we still need to move on positively.

I think sending kids GEP training is a resonable way to dig out kids’ potential ability.


During kids staying at school, they are all trainned by their teachers. In fact, all our kids are trainned everyday in different ways, some kids can take and accept extra trainning, why not? As those kids possess the higher ability to accept more.

I have experiece to deal with my DD, I also want to give her some extra knowledge beyond her class, but I found it’s not easy to let her take it, no matter how I explained. After a few times trying, I know my DD’s degee, and I choose giving up my trying, let her just follow her school learning.

But I though if my DD can take more, I will also give her chances to obsorb more.

Send for kids to GEP trainning is one thing, the most important is whether kids can take. If kids can take and absorb the extra learning, that means kids have the ability to learn higher level course.

In fact, I know many GEP kids are well prepared before they went for GEP screenning test, and they are still doing well after they went in GEP classes.

While there have been many discussion on whether to train or not, does anyone know exactly what is the scope of these training?


It may just be another form of enrichment class.

After reading all the sharing in this thread from parents on the other side of the fence, those still sitting on the fence (ouch!) and those who have made it to the over side (the greener side?), I've come to these conclusions.


That most of the the children who have cleared Round 1, have a fair chance of excelling within the GEP system. Once selected, they just need to adjust mindset and go with a pinch of gungho attitude.

That the 500+ cut-off is just an arbitrary number to accomodate limited resources. The ones who get chosen are a wee bit more lucky than the others. Very much due to extra coaching or just the luck of the draw. It does not necessarily mean that they are 'more clever' because we don't know how reliable the tests are and what they are being trained for.

That those who are given the chance, grab it because the curriculum is fortified and enriched (sounds like baby formula?) and will benefit the child. The only exception is when the child turns it down.

Now like the company's AD&D, sit back and wait for your number to be picked. :xedfingers:

To all parents whose kids got into the selection test, take heart tt your child is among the top 10% of cohort already. My eldest did not get selected but her psle results last yr showed tt she was top 10% as she was offered 3rd lang and also received the edusave scholarship (top 10% of sch)...so be very proud of your kid:)

for me, it would be nice to be seen as top 1% or top 10%. But what is more important to me is that we get the key to the door which we wanted to go thru, and from there, work towards the next door.

May I check with you, the edusave scholarship for p6 is top 10% of psle of the school or top 10% of the prelim exam of the school?
