Higher Chinese in P5 - To opt or not

HCL is not solely for SAP school (secondary). Many other secondary schools allow their students to take HCL or HMT as well. If they pass the HCL at O level, they are exempted from CL2 at JC. Together with S1 posting exercise, the students will be told whether they are eligible for HMT in Sec 1Hi Mummies,
I happened to see this thread. It's very interesting
Higher CL is for children who are aiming for SAP secondary school right? And taking it at PSLE means the child has to do NORMAL CL as well as HCL paper. Is taking HCL solely for the purpose of SAP secondary ?
I hope to find out more because my son is in P4 this year in a SAP school. Still deciding whether he should drop HCL next year to focus on CL.
Please give me more advice. Thanks -
Hi verykiasu,
So HCL can be taken at secondary schools other than SAP sec ones.
What is S1 posting ? Sorry, really no idea but just want to find out a bit more in advance. -

S1 posting is after PSLE, u select your 6 choices of sec schools, and the result of Sec one (S1) posting will be made known around 10 days before end Dec ....and MOE will also send info to the schools concerned as to who are eligible to take HMT -
My boy is in P5 this year. He got 83 marks for his Chinese last year. His school did not recommend him to take HCL but we could opt for it if we want to. Initially, we wanted to let him try out for a year. However, his school & teachers do not encourage us to do so. According to his principal, the return is better if he put in his time & effort on the other subjects. Which mean you might get more than 3 points. You need at least a merit for HCL in PSLE in order to do HCL in secondary school. You will also need to get a distinction in order to get 3 points & the points can only use for SAP schools.

I am studying in P6 in a girls’ school. In my prev sch, there was no higher chinese. When I transferred to my present sch in P4, my mother advised me not to take HMT in P4 as I was adjusting to a new sch. I was very bored in the MT class coz all those who were good or quite good were all in HMT class so those in my MT class were those who were very weak in MT. My mother allowed me to take HMT since P5 and I am much happier in HMT class.

When I was in P4, my classmates alw asked me what I was doing in the MT class. I don’t speak Mandarin at home but has no probl in MT

Does it mean that students who did not do HCL in PSLE will not be offered HCL in Sec Sch/O levels even if they score well in the NCL in PSLE?

No, you are mistaken. Students who did not do HCL in PSLE can still take HCL in Sec Sch / O Level. I have seen a few cases of fren's kids not taking HCL in primary sch, but end up taking HCL in Sec sch. This is esp so for those who went to IP or Band 1/2 sec schs or SAP schools. -

there are certain criteria for it, something like top 30% of the cohort ....i think jtoh knows this very well.....or already posted within this thread, just read backwardScaredyMum:

- must take MTL or HMTL at PSLE
- top 10% of PSLE cohort
- top 11-30% of PSLE cohort and meet language criteria: A* in MTL or at least a merit in HMTL
