Hi E3 , didn't know your child is in p3 .. I thought p6 when you provided me the recommendations for science. I saw the casco 100% science assessment u recommended at popular , did u get the p3 one or upgrade? Btw , can u also recommend abt good eng and math assessments? Any good English guide bk ?

      quote=\"comfy\"]

      E3:
      hl124273:

I hear her telling me that her current P2 classmates were doing/reading P3 books since the beginning of this year (which means P2 doing P3 standard) and one of her good friend was doing 20+ pages of assessments daily. She even showed me the book that her current P2 best friend is using ( a P3/3 compo book) .. Do I really have to \"upgrade\" ?

If your dd is able to cope, it will be good to do advance learning.
Realising that the cut off points for the better secondary schools call for a min of 250, I am wondering if my DD will ever make it there .. given that she is in the third class at P3 ?

It is too early to tell for your dd. P3 will be tougher because of one more subject, Science, and apparently higher standard of HCL. Do try and monitor her progress after CA1. Give her the neccesary support. At the end of P3, some selected GEP students will transfer to other schools, so if your dd does well in her current class, she can be promoted to a better class.
When will they stream again ?
They band the kids into different classes yearly, except for P1.
For those parents whose PHPPS DD or DS did well in class or PSLE, will like to seek your advise on how you motivate your kid to study, or do you have to constantly spend hours to revise daily on the school work plus assessments ? Any good science assessments to recommend for P3 ?
The basic foundation and concepts must be clear and well-built. My dd has consistent revision daily, except for the weekends. Learn from mistakes, remember common errors. Identify and practise her weak areas constantly.

She is using the Your Companion to Science - A Complete Guide to PSLE by FBP and Science PSLE Revision Guide 2nd Ed by Marshall Cavendish. The assessment books are CASCO 100% Science and Science Process Skills by Teachers@work and lots of practices from past years papers.
HCL, how does that help in the PSLE score? Her HCL chinese comprehension is weak, how can I help her improve?
HCL comes in handy for the application to SAP sec (COP >=250)
No marks for HCL, just grades.
Distinction: additional 3 points added to T-score
Merit: additional 2 points added to T-score
Pass: additional 1 point added to T-score

Discuss with her teacher and tutor what are her weak areas for the Comprehension. Is it her understanding of the passage or phrasing of her answers? In general, the HCL papers in PH are tougher but that doesn't mean we get into an off-guard mode, cos the child will lose interest and ultimately perform worse. Keep their interest going by reading chinese books or watching chinese shows that appeal to them. Speak as much as possible at home.

      All the best. 😉
Wah! E3, when I read the above, I realised we are on different plane. Your dd is so discipline and consistent in her work. P3 and she already on PSlE guide books. :yikes: From what I can see, she really has no problem in GEP, leh. She is well prepared, so sit back & enjoy the journey. I wish my dd is also like that, that I don't have to feel the stress & 'heat' of GEP. 😄
C'mon comfy. Something must be wrong if we consider our GEP kids as not good enough.

How about this? To solve your problem, we exchange children? 😆

Aiyo, Mark, are you sure? Your precious ds that can play classical song on piano so well, mature in thinking.... in xchange for my dd.
I din meant that way, what I meant is in comparison with E3'dd. 一山还有一山高 mah. Sometimes, after 1 year of being GEP mom, I think those gifted + hardworking + consistent work will cope very well in GEP. So E3, your dd seems to fit the bill. 😉

Hi, I have a DD going K2 next year, and Pei Hwa in the following year … and now I wonder if it matters whether a kid comes from a top notch kindy or it doesn’t matter? Will be intersted to hear from all of you whose kids are already in PHPPS and are coping well … does kindy matter ? I see many of my friends sending their kids to Pat’s schoolhouse … does it really matter, as in they prepare the kids better for P1 ? My gal is attending Montessori childcare … definitely not the cream of the crop but I think it’s ok as they seem to be well rounded … of couse they aren’t exposed to the high tech stuffs taught in Pat’s schoolhouse from what I heard.

What are the high tech stuff?

Actually I think Montessori kids learn more than those in the classroom based kindergartens following MOE teaching guidelines.

Just curious, which are the top-notch kindy that you are referring to besides Pat's Schoolhouse?

Ultimately, parents involvement is more critical than top notch kindy.
I choose my dd's kindy based on convenience and distance and she turns out alright. If they are enjoyinging themselves in the current school and learning well, they will be fine. It might be good like what E3 mentioned .. start exposing the young one with P1 stuff.

An account of what happened yesterday night which really shocked me …

My son’s cousin visited and after hearing that he was posted to No. 2 class in P3, my son secretly told me that that was the lousiest class among all!!!

I tried to explain to him that there is no "lousiest" class as according to the Principal’s talk I have attended, she said that besides the four classes which are ranked (9,8,7,6), the rest are mixed ability class. However, he insisted that there is ranking among the mixed ability classes as well, as principal told them that 9,8,7 and 6 are the first 4 high ability classes, ranked in descending order, 1 is the best among the average ability class and then, the rest of the classes ranked according to 5 4 3 2.

I have two concern after hearing his comment for the first time.

                      (1) Is there really hidden ranking in the school?
                      (2) How is class ranking communicated to the students.

I am thankful that my son is in the so called "higher ability" ranked class, which in a way helped build up his confidence. However, I am also worried about the impact of this ranking system on the average ability students, worst of all, the so called "last class" students. Are they perceived to be "lousy" by themselves or by their school mates? I am worried about the damage on the confidence level of some of these kids, as I personally believe that confidence in young kids and is an important step to success.

You know me. I tend to see the lighter side of everything. 😄

If everybody compares with E3, then we'll get 359 pairs of stressed P3 parents. 人比人氣死人 mah.

Compared with us mainstreamers, your dd is already 高高在上. 😉
