All About Preparing For Primary One
-
z_lynn, jia you! If you practise daily, you will see that she’ll remember it by the time she gets to primary 1!!

I teach my girl myself for math and english. While she can do plus and minus up to 100, i have difficulty in trying to make her understand multiplication tables. She can only do 2 and 3.
Any suggestions? -
Multiplication is an extension of addition. I don’t think schools are requiring children to memorise the times table anymore. However, it is good if one can memorise it, as it allows you to work out the answers for multiplication questions faster.
Try to explain multiplication in terms of groups of something. E.g. 2 x 4 as 2 groups of fours (you can use 2 groups of 4 apples). The answer 8 is actually adding the 2 groups together, i.e. 4 + 4 = 8.
3 x 4 is 3 groups of fours. The answer is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Either through drawing and getting her to ring the 12 items into 3 separate groups of 4, or doing this physically with real objects, you should be able to slowly show the real meaning of multiplication.
Once the concept is understood, and if you still want her to memorise the time table, by all means go for it.
Questions from school seems to be in the form of "group (20) apples into groups of 5" and from there write the correct equation as "4 X 5 = 20". To get to the answer, if one doesn’t know the times table, just need to count the number of apples. Or if the question asks how many groups there are, one can count that there are 4 groups of 5 apples each.
This is how I would do it, hope it helps. -
Thanks so much, Busymom for good, kind tips. Now i know how to teach my girl.

hi Chief and all parents,
Can advice me? my gal is 4 and have been in Montessori preschool and my focus on her was on Language and Maths
1. English - home whole word trained (can already read on her ownLevel 3 to 4 of read-it-youself books) but learn phonics in school (can do blends and now we doing some worksheets)
2. Chinese - whole word trained, finished basic strokes writing practicing, now practicing writing whole simple single word. Hanyu pinyin not touched coz thought its better to teach her to read the word rather than rely on hanyu pinyin but i realize she can use the hanyu pinyin in the storybooks everytime she forgot the chinese characters. Coz her mummy me now cant really read or write chinese characters, i need the help of hanyu pinyin…so i reckon if i start hanyu pinyin with her, she will get "lazy" and just read the hanyu pinyin…
3. Maths - doing montessori style but now can progress to Units and tens vertical sums, horizontal subtraction done.
I hope you can recommend or share with me the following
1. What else should i focus on to prepare for P1 i.e. go phonics class, go hanyi pinyin class or stick to chinese character first?
2. Recommendations for affordable classes near parkway or should i just continue her own pace in her montessori pre-school?
(she has piano & swimming now which i want to maintain hence do not wish to tire her out weekends)
3. When should i start Kumon maths?
I am confused now and am worried ifi stress her too much coz sometimes i see she is stressed when she forgot the answer…and i see K1 and K2 assessment books (i do assessments books with her at home daily to encourage a daily routine of doing work before play & bedtime), it seems they need to know how to write alot of words by K1…are we too slow already???
I use to think i will not get so stressed up till she is about 5 or 6 to prepare for P1… but now i am getting sips of fear juice seeping into my veins… and i am the only one at home who have been and tend to think (and paying) for her development first…Everyone else is more on the "let her have a happy (play) childhood" mode …its very stressful for me…so appreciate any advice! -
Hi I m new. What is a good ctr fr Math fr P1. Can anyone recommend?
-
quixation:
If your girl is just 4 and can do all of the above mentioned, then I don't think u shud even worry about her P1... teaching kids too early may backfire coz they may not pay attention to teachers in sch. that happened to dd when childcare taught hanyu pinyin and in her chinese enrichment, she was cheeky coz she already knew all of those.hi Chief and all parents,

normal development of k1s don't need to knw how to write many words till after mid year. most kindergartens and childcares start writing officially only at K1 level. if u look at assessment books, they are generally made with some slight difficulty. with some pages usually abit tougher than their age.
but if child is advanced, then may complete entire book at their level in a couple of days. tried and tested - example - a K2 child finishing a K2 300+ pages assessment book in a couple of days...
bottom point is - dun wori. ur gal is already advanced!
