Cannot compare like that lah. You should know better what (I think your kid is there right?). The GPA is a great joke.

In the earlier years they even have common test on different dates. What do you think would happen? Some silly head .... and was stopped.

Depends on the questions and how much hints .... Personally I know of kids who never study also can get GPA 4 for certain assessments. However, among the students, they know who are the best.

      Friend,

Competition is very keen there. There are couple of girls who are outstanding (she is definitely among them) and it is not easy to differentiate them academically. To be fair to the girl, if you look at her humble family background, I think what she has achieved so far is great.

Surely there are smart ones who don’t study and still be able to score GPA 4.0. But definitely not easy to maintain that if they don’t change their studying habits.

Were your girls from RGS too?

The fact that she is no longer the top 10 in the school also prove that T score calculation is skewed towards Malay subject.

My son took 2007 PSLE. Solved all the tough math questions made him scored 260 with only two A* (M & S).

This example clearly shows that M & S has higher weightage

Thanks CrazyDad for the information. How do you know so much? 😎 Anybody knows what happen to those poor kids who failed? MOE should have taken this into account before setting this year's papers. :x Seems like they keep raising the bar no matter what.

This is in fact blessing in disguise. With tough questions, PSLE will indeed segregate the real talented from the extremely hardworking student.
If the questions are not good enough to separate those two groups of students, they both will go to school where \"Special\" programs are being taught. The outcome is that the \"extremely hardworking \" students will suffer.
As a result, not to worry about those students that failed. It merely send them to the school best fit their current background. Need to know that some kids mature earlier than the others. So giving them the right learning environment is actually much better than squeezing them into places where they do not belong. At time, when they are mentally more developed, they can excel as well.
For example, boy's results always lack behind girl in Primary, but in Secondary, the result of boys normally can overtake the girls.

            Hi NYCWTC,

            Are you from MOE?
The reason to start this topic is to lure the real MOE dude to put in the REAL Mean and Std Dev. Because whatever we put out here are just some guided guesstimation. Wonder why MOE cannot release these information.

I have been searching for sometime but get nothing... :?
No, I am not from MOE. But it really just seems impossible for the average for Chinese to be 78...and the others too.

Then can you give your version of mean & std dev for the 4 subjects?

I too find that Crazydad’s figures a little high on the mean, guts feel.

                  This number actually make sense.
See there are 81% of students scored 75 and above, and 2% of student failed. If you fit this into Gaussian, then the mean will be 70. But this also means 50% of student will be more than 70 and this contradict the actual statistic (81% scored more than 75 marks). So now you have to use Skewed Gaussian, but by how much. So take one point at a time and perform the \"H test\". Now can apply Poisson Distribution with lambda to the power of one over two.
Still we need more real data.

Now that you have estimated T score, it is about time to look for a school that fits this. Please go to this site http://app.sis.moe.gov.sg/schinfo/SIS_AdvSearch.asp, just key in the score in the last box, a list of suitable school will be shown

Hi crazydad , can you help this suaku parent to put it in more layman's term.

Do you mean first T score formula shall apply using their raw score, then Skewed Gaussian will apply to moderate the T score further if the whole cohort don't do well, the Skewed Gaussian is used to push up the marks of the whole cohort ?

                      Thank you.

Thank you.[/quote]Statistically, the mean score and the standard deviation are already a moderating tools. What i can say about the T-Score for Chinese (with 80% scoring A and A*) is that, the mean score is VERY high at least 82 and the SD is about 7-8 marks. It means that your child has to score above 82 before he can obtain a T-score of 50 and above. Any marks below the mean score would result in score below 50 for Chinese. I am sure alot of parents dont realise that, thinking that as long as my child score 75 marks would be sufficient. That was why a student who scored 3A* and 1A (chinese) would get a score of 244. The A for Chinese would have given him a T-score of 41 if he scores only 75 marks.
