River Valley High School [*IP]

Y1 students are given 2 choices for sport, 2 choices for performing arts and 2 choices for uniform gp. But it seems that even if those students are not given their choice, they seem to be happy in that cca. Guess it’s the attitude of the students that is really important.

Hi onemore.
Dear WeiHan, Thank you very much for the information.
Noticed the name of RV top student did not appear in any of the list; does anyone knows why he failed to make it there?
On RV CCA, are students normally given the CCA of their choice?
The list I provide is the most prestigious PSC scholarship. There are many other less prestigious government and private scholarships which there is no easily available data.
Regarding your question why the top student didn't appear in the list, I am not totally sure. From what I know, PSC and many other scholarships started interviewing prospective scholars well before A level results. It seems that A level result isn't the most important factor. Many students with, for example, 6 distinctions are able to secure prestigious scholarship. Each year, there are hundreds of a level students with 7 or more distinctions, only a small number make it to the list.
There are many possible reasons for not being in the list. Poor interview performance is one possible reason. He failed his law faculty interview too. I think in the end he got a University scholarship from NUS. -

I've got 254 + 2 for my PSLE. Is there any confirmation that I would be able to get into RV?

Hi. Are there more of your schoolmates with more than 257 choosing RV this year? If you are able to answer this question, then I'll be able to predict whether you will get a confirmation.
But my guess is that you have 95% chance of getting a place.
One has it for second choice (258 + 2). Another, with 255 without HCL added. Her HCL should have a merit or distinction. The third has 256 + 2 but she has a CO already. -
Hi All,
I need someone to help clarify if possible on this scenario :
My dd got 255, A* for CL but did not take HCL in her PSLE. Her friend 252 (+3) for HCL and also A* for CL. Who gets the priority to be selected first if both intends to apply for 1st choice in RV? -

Do the NAPFA test play a part in letting the students go up the next year?

Oh, ok thanks. Because in the open house, the principal said students need to have at least a bronze to go to year 3.Yewniffler171:

What else can be more comforting for a parent... I share your sentiment, Pepper Spice.Justsay, your case is quite similar to mine. Son only got slightly better t-score than your daughter. He badly wanted to go RV. I warned him of Higher Chinese and him being borderline case. He bravely applied, got in, and survived the system relatively well (no tuitions in primary / sec schools). I do not know his ranking in this school, he did not receive any awards (except some SMO thingy, some cert of distinction in math) but with average scores of 75+, I am satisfied. The school also gives him opportunities in CCA, math talent program etc, I feel he is getting quite a wholesome education (definitely not neglected). The only exception is in leadership, son is too lazy and bochap to be a leader, so he prefers to be a follower most of the time and be “small group leader” only. LOL. Fine for me cos not everyone is born to lead.
Mid of this year, he said he is worried of the low standard of Chinese in his class (esp boys, including himself, mostly cannot make it to minimum B4). I asked him if he wants Chinese tuition, he assured me no need, school teacher is doing enough to guide them. To me, if school teacher is doing enough and my son is still B4 or C grade, I think it is because my son’s foundation is not good or he is not hardworking enough, not because teacher neglected him. But I find SAP school is good, tho Chinese is not his strong subject, he does not hate Chinese, Chinese literature or Chinese history. Recently, he even told me about 鸿门宴 , 三十六计走为上计。 Boy, I was so pleased..
Sorry, a bit long-winded, random and off-topic.
Another thing I like about the school is the character building in the chinese cultured environment. I see most of the students in RV are well behaved and well mannered & not creating troubles like many teenagers nowadays. :imanangel: -

The handout on Sat shows 11 recevied scholarships, that exclude RV top students.
