When a school has a good reputation to keep, the school will keep its reputation at all costs. Singaporean style.

That's a fair statement at all
In schools like RI where 100% of the students are doing IP, would you not think that it's teachers, curriculum, programmes are not quite geared towards or optimized for preparing a handful (Less than 10) who for whatever reasons decide to drop out of IP & opt for 'O' levels instead.

Therefore, in fact it is the more sensible and responsible thing to do - i.e. Students opting out of IP hv to transfer out of the sch

I can see some parents whose kids scored btw 249+2 - 252 hoping to get into an IP school. Sometimes i wander whether they shld be in O-level track and make their choices after the O-level exam. Academically speaking, many of these kids are potential polys' scholarship holders.

              Hi Edureach,
We are one set of parents who decided to buck the trend and choose o level route for DS even though he scored 25X. Both he and I feel that he should have a choice after o levels. If he really wants JC we wd support him even if it is not the best JC. But if he cd get a scholarship to go to poly his confidence wd be boosted. He saw an ad for an IDA sship for poly and further studies at P3 and said he wants to aim for it. Even though his results were marginal we always encouraged him. And told him hard work matters. True enough he went from 77th in his level for prelim to one the top students in school. This was such a boost to his confidence. Now he believes he can achieve things with hard work.

When u work you realize it's the confidence and soft skills that make one successful. Of course sec school adds to prestige but it's by no means the only ingredient.

What MOE can do, if any school does not follow?

Wait and see. 🙂 If the schools in question do not repeat themselves, we know they've been dealt with. If they continue, it shows that MOE has no bite.

Actually it depends on IF MOE wants to do something, not WHAT can MOE do. All students records are with MOE, hence all transfer must be made effective via MOE in the end, not to mention if the school we are talking about is a government school, MOE has the right to transfer the Principal concerned. At this point, I believe, it is just a guideline from MOE, that's why it still gives the Principals discretion to allow any transfer between schools.

You mean that's not a fair statement? Well, I agree that some students should drop out of IP and opt of 'O' levels, and take the 'O' levels under the RI name/umbrella. Not as private candidates or transfer out. This policy has been around for years, even when RI offered O levels.

parents with daughters who had accepted DSA from other Sec school, but who are now interested to enter NYGH, may note the formal reply from NYGH:-

                    a) \"DSA students who have submitted their school option should honour their DSA acceptance - as significant resources and effort have been put in the whole DSA exercise. Transfer request of DSA cases based solely on PSLE results are strongly discouraged. However, our school will consider DSA appeal cases with extenuating factors (eg: a DSA student who is unable to fulfil her commitment to the DSA school CCA due to a permanent leg injury, after accepting the DSA offer).

for your information, our appeal exercise starts on 24 Nov 12noon and ends on 23 Dec 5pm. Appeal form is available on our school website during the said period.

We are unable to advise you on this year's cut off point, as it will only be made known to us on the 22 Dec.\"

                    b) if a child at end of Sec 2 cannot cope with rigorous IP curriculum prefer a more structured O level curriculum, is there an alternative exit out ?

                    reply:-
\"The student can seek a transfer to another school, if she is unable to cope with the IP programme.\"

                      hi BlurDad,

i had helped you pose your 2 questions to the HCI presenter.
                      here is his reply:-

                      a) if a child has already accepted a DSA offer from ACS (I) - there is no chance for an appeal according to MOE regulations.

                      b) a T-score of 257+2 stands a very good chance of entering HCI.
BUT he must place HCI as first choice in the S1 option form.
                      Hi phtthp

Thank you very for your help.

I guess, my DS would not have any chance appeal to HCI. As he was already accepted by ACS(I) via DSA. For RI, with T-Socre 256, I guess it is almost impossible.

Will ask my DS to accept the reality and encourage him to work hard in ACS(I).

                        Dear BlurDad,

All the very best to your son. The IB track at ACS(I) is very challenging. A former colleague's son went there at first at his mother's insistence but now he appreciates it. They are asked to do a lot of research and presentations - which has developed his ability to work independently and improved his confidence. He is not very good at presentation (although very good academically) - but he says he has been given encouragement to improve. He is helping our team with some work unofficially this holidays - and I can see he is a friendly, sociable and very likeable young man.

While we empathise with your feelings for your son's dream - which parent would want his/her child's dream not to be fulfilled - we are sincere when we say that this might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. All the very best for your son and Congratulations to both of you.
