Mighty Math - Discussion
-
hi wan2bdad,
Yes! this month is the busy exam month, Term 4 approaching year end. Many mommies are very busy at home, helping children prepare exams & brewing 'memory' chicken herbal soup to help child remember facts well.
i think Mighty Maths is not bad, as it covers and teach our children 2 aspects - a) Foundational Maths b) Heuristic Maths. Mighty Maths teach by hands on approach first, then followed by practise colorful worksheets, to reinforce concepts.
most students usually do not have problem understanding Foundational Maths (FM). But some may, where Heuristic Maths (HM) is concerned. Majority schools start teaching HM from P2 onwards, although minority schools may start teaching from P1 Term 4 onwards. Hence, it is good that Mighty Maths cover Heuristic Maths portion as well.
to me, i feel one Maths enrichment is sufficient. However that mom you happen to meet where her child take 2 Maths enrichment - perhaps because her child happen to be in those schools where it is a norm to send kids to the The Learning Lab (TLL is very ex). Her mom worry that her child may lose out to her classmates, if she doesn't send her child to TLL practise those difficult mock exam papers. Not sure how TLL teach, does it have hands on approach first, before attempting worksheets next?
if you're keen, you may pay TLL a visit. Ask them to show you sample worksheets see what they cover - for that level you're interested in for your child (nearer the time when your child reach P1, P2, P3, etc). See how far off is it from Mighty Maths ? compare & contrast:-
- Syllabus (content covered),
- teaching style, approach or methodology adopted in class,
- Teachers to kids ratio per group,
- duration each session,
- any replacement lesson if child falls sick,
- any others.
every child learns differently. Choose the one that is most appropriate for your child. One Maths enrichment enough. Drop whichever you deem not so suitable.
in fact, too much enrichment makes your child tired.
on the contrary, there are kids who excel in Maths, without going for any enrichment.

Thanks, I do agree with you … I thought too many programs will confuse the child.
-
Very interesting… can I have more details of their centre… my DD din do well for her SA… she din understand the math concepts taught in school…
-
Hi Parentingangel,
I overheard today during the conversation between parents and the teachers that their students did well in their current final examinations.
But I think you should schedule your DD for a diagnostic test with the Mighty Math teachers. You can find out if the program suits your DD. -
Will this program be useful for kids who join them when they are in their upper primary? (Not too late?)
-
Hi Junrahmat,
I have seen many older kids with the program when i sent my DS to class.
You shld call them for a free diagnostic assessment.
I also overheard that one of their student has been selected for GEP… hope my DS can also be selected one day… -
Do they have programmes for P1? Many many ctrs dont have. What is Heuristics? Is it a topic in Math? Or a programme? Will the school teach because I look through the school text book and cannot find HEURISTICS in the text book.
My child is going to P1 next year and I am a but ‘kan cheong’. I wanted to give him a head start in his studies. He has been with Berries and enjoying the class. Now I am looking for English and Math.
Any recommendations mommies? -
Hi icesnow,
I have just PMed you.
Tks. -
Hi KSmommy1975,
At Punggol Blk 176 branch, I have seen primary school kids, so I think they definitely have P1 classes.
As for term "Heuristic", I dont think there’s such a chapter in the textbook to cover this topic. I learnt this from my DS teacher, Stella, and according to her, it refers to the different problem solving techniques that can be applied to work out the story sums.
If you do a search on the net, some primary schools even conduct such workshops for their parents to teach kids the heuristic techniques. -
Hi wan2bdad
Pls PM your son’s details as I am planning to sign my 2 sons for mighty math at punggol. Thanks in adv!
