I am a full time tutor with 5 years of experience. I only charge $25/hr for tuition at my house and $30/hr for tuition at the student’s house. However, as my schedule is rather tight, I can only travel to student’s house in Bukit Panjang area.

        :slapshead: hi parents here!!!

I would like to enquiry that do you all comes across any home tuition fee are collecting @ the 1st lesson? Which the tutor requested. :slapshead:

If so, what do you thing about it? :siam:
Well, my personally think that is so weird and quite insecure for the parents side. There are a lot of points as in :-
what if the child not suit with the teachers'?
what if the teachers' run off?
        what if no improve?
        well, doesn't make sense? Isn't?

please kindly, share your comments..........thanks in advance!!

Don't agree to it! Personally, I will collect the fee after every lesson to be fair to both the parents and myself. I have encountered parents counting the number of lessons wrongly, especially if they have changed some lesson dates and timings. Hence, I feel that it's fairer to both parties to charge by per lesson.

Don't pay any fees in advance, i.e. pay for one month's worth of lessons when your child has had only one lesson.

Usually a current school teacher will charge a rate of $40/hr onwards. So if a degree holder with some experience also charging this rate, I’d rather get a current school teacher. JMHO.

I think the difference is if the degree holder is a full time tutors. Full time tutors tend to charge similar or near current/ex teachers rates.

Expect for edlerflowertea which is rather surprising, I think the rates I mentioned can be observed esp if you look around this forum.

Im looking for tutors for my P5 girl and have source for various Tuition agencies. But Im doubting the rates they quote. Full time tutor at $40/hr, is it reasonable? Do share the current rates of your child tutors 😂

I agree that the rate for P5 tuition can be lower. 🆒 Is your house quite out of the way for the tutors? Some tutors may quote higher rates if the student's house is not so accessible by public transport or if they have to travel long distances for the assignment.

Having said that, I think that if you are able to wait for more quotes, you should be able to find a tutor who will teach your DD for less.

Hi worriesmommy, its true that there are many what-ifs on the parents' side. I mean, why would anyone want to pay if he does not see any results right? From our experience, many of our tutors have their what-ifs as well. Tutors who have encountered some bad parents who withhold payment permanently, students who are not home on scheduled lessons such that tutor's time and travelling is wasted etc.
From what we see, some of these tutors who charge in advance are either con-men, or they have very recently been scarred by a bad experience =/

If only we can all treat each other with respect by default.

Hi Mdm Koh, agree that you can afford to wait for more quotes first. $40/hr for P5 is normally charged by ex-teachers or graduate full-time tutors with more than 5yrs of sterling experience. I'm not sure how other tuition agencies do their quotes, but we normally give parents exactly what is quoted by the tutors, especially when tutors apply through our online platform and an email is immediately sent to the parent.

Another thing to note, is try not to take more than 1 wk to decide on a tutor. If the tutor is genuinely popular, he/she cannot reserve the time-slots for you for long. Good luck with your search!

Hi there. I agree with you on the what-ifs. That's why I have been charging by per lesson. I have encountered parents who count the number of lessons incorrectly. Although they still pay me accordingly, sometimes I see their suspicious eyes. Maybe they have genuinely counted wrongly so from their point of view, I could be trying to cheat them.

Thus, to avoid all these, I've changed to collecting payment after every lesson. I don't see why tutors should collect money in advance.
