All About Market Rates of Private Tutors

Mdm Koh:
Hi Mdm Koh, agree that you can afford to wait for more quotes first. $40/hr for P5 is normally charged by ex-teachers or graduate full-time tutors with more than 5yrs of sterling experience. I'm not sure how other tuition agencies do their quotes, but we normally give parents exactly what is quoted by the tutors, especially when tutors apply through our online platform and an email is immediately sent to the parent.cheerygirl:
Im looking for tutors for my P5 girl and have source for various Tuition agencies. But Im doubting the rates they quote. Full time tutor at $40/hr, is it reasonable? Do share the current rates of your child tutors

I agree that the rate for P5 tuition can be lower.
Is your house quite out of the way for the tutors? Some tutors may quote higher rates if the student's house is not so accessible by public transport or if they have to travel long distances for the assignment.
Having said that, I think that if you are able to wait for more quotes, you should be able to find a tutor who will teach your DD for less.
Another thing to note, is try not to take more than 1 wk to decide on a tutor. If the tutor is genuinely popular, he/she cannot reserve the time-slots for you for long. Good luck with your search! -

Hi there. I agree with you on the what-ifs. That's why I have been charging by per lesson. I have encountered parents who count the number of lessons incorrectly. Although they still pay me accordingly, sometimes I see their suspicious eyes. Maybe they have genuinely counted wrongly so from their point of view, I could be trying to cheat them.
Hi worriesmommy, its true that there are many what-ifs on the parents' side. I mean, why would anyone want to pay if he does not see any results right? From our experience, many of our tutors have their what-ifs as well. Tutors who have encountered some bad parents who withhold payment permanently, students who are not home on scheduled lessons such that tutor's time and travelling is wasted etc.worriesmommy:
:slapshead: hi parents here!!!
I would like to enquiry that do you all comes across any home tuition fee are collecting @ the 1st lesson? Which the tutor requested. :slapshead:
If so, what do you thing about it? :siam:
Well, my personally think that is so weird and quite insecure for the parents side. There are a lot of points as in :-
what if the child not suit with the teachers'?
what if the teachers' run off?
what if no improve?
well, doesn't make sense? Isn't?
please kindly, share your comments..........thanks in advance!!
From what we see, some of these tutors who charge in advance are either con-men, or they have very recently been scarred by a bad experience =/
If only we can all treat each other with respect by default.
Thus, to avoid all these, I've changed to collecting payment after every lesson. I don't see why tutors should collect money in advance. -
Hmmโฆ Quite interesting to read.
Just curious, if you are a tutor or someone who employed a tutor to teach the child, please share with me. How do the tutor teach? Do they bring their own assessment materials? Or do they bring any commercially available assessment books or do they ask you to buy your own assessment books?
Experienced mummies, please mind to share.
Thank you. -

Different tutors have different teaching methods. Unlike tuition centres, some tutors have to rely on commercially available assessment books given the limited resources they have. But to think about it, tuition centres' worksheets and commercially available assessent books are generally mass produced without catering to individual students. These resources will be helpful if the kid himself/herself are self-motivated and are able to cope rather well with the subjects.
Some of the tutors do prepare worksheets and cater for individual needs. Usually this is a one-to-one tuition case. If a kid has specific weakness or difficulties in certain area, this type of tuition will better help them in coping with school work and exams.
Of course, I have to admit that there are black sheeps in the market, where tutors are quite irresponsible and leave everything to parents in term of choosing assessment books. Some of them just help the kids in finishing their school work.
Again, different kids have different character/personality. So when you are to look for a tutor, you have to check with the tutor whether their teaching methods suit your kid. A good tutor to one might not be a suitable tutor to another. Sometimes parents emphasize too much on academic and overlook kid's feeling. Before any tuition, maybe a talk to the kid to better understand them would be a good option, rather than to just hire who you think is good for them.
Hope this helps. Cheers! -

:thankyou: Yes, I agree with you. Different kids differ in some ways. I don't mind the tutors bringing their own assessment books or ask the parents to buy the assessment books. Just wanted to know. That is it.

Could you share a little bit more? Will you ask the child to do the assessments when you are there or will you ask them to do whenever possible and then you go to correct and explain whatever the child don't understand? thank you in advance. -

Even if it's just a careless mistakes. But how much work to do in class and how much homework the child can cope with, will depend on situation.
I used to coach this girl where she is very self-motivated and she is determined to excel. However she did not perform well due to the lack of proper guidance and thus she gets frustrated with herself at times. After a few lessons, I realised that the better way for her is to help her in prioritisation, and so I give her work, help her in planning, and during class I will mark her work and go through her mistakes. This slowly builds up her confidence and makes the lesson much fruitful.
There is this little boy who is highly active, but adorable. The key challenge for me is that he can hardly concentrate. He does not do my homework, and even in class I will have to win him over some card games before he work on a few questions. Lessons were slow, as the effort to make him concentrate took up quite some time. Sometimes a 2 hour tuition session can be extended to even 3 hours, in order to finish the work. Initially I was worried that the parents might not be happy with the progress. Luckily they are understanding and show trust in me. A few months down the road, I received sms from this boy (not from the mummy), he took the initiative himself asking me if I can go over for extra lessons before exam. I was so touched and happy that my effort didn't go into waste. Attitude is going to bring him back right on track. This year, when his results came out, he was second in class!
Of course there are some cases where I really have no idea how to handle it as I get pressured by parents. I am still learning how to deal with different kids!

Hi ms_chai,
:thankyou: Yes, I understand the process now. Thank you again. -
Maybe this will work. First engage the tutor for one subject through the agency. Then negotiate in private with the tutor for a lower rate with more subjects or students.

Mdm Koh:
I agree with Mdm Koh. No need to be pressurise to pay a fee that you are not comfortable with. Beside there is no guarantee that teacher with a 40/hr rate will be better than another teacher with rates lower than 40/hr.cheerygirl:

Most tutors that go through agencies charges by the hour. The number of subjects therefore would not change the payment due unless you are increasing the number of lessons/hours per month.
Might be possible for Primary level tuition where most tutors can or will teach everything. At secondary level, tutors tend to specialize in one or two subjects only.
If you have more than one child that require a tutor, just get one first. If he is good enough, then try negociating for the other child. If the tuition are back to back then the tutor makes less trips which helps him/her to bring down the costs!
