      Hi ksp,

May I just asked how do u get boy interested in reading story book on their own?DS can read but not interested. No story line seems to interest him.I think he is lazy.Anyone has got suggestion?Thank you.

Can you pls share what are the various books that your child is reading?thanks again.

      Cheers
Some kids just dun love to read. DS2 is a bit reluctant but he will eagerly pore through books on animals and Ben 10. So I pander to his choices as much as I can.

DS1 is the one that enjoys reading, the stuff he has read include:
      Dinosaur Cove
Captain Underpants - lowbrow but hugely entertaining for boys
Magic Treehouse - kids who discover a magic treehouse that transport them to places and events in the past. a lot of books in this series.
Astrosaurs - about dinos who evolved and lived in space, fight between good and evil
      Stilton books - famous enough
Shoo Rayner books - he has a few series that are very good (monster boy is the only 1 I can remember offhand)
Charlie Small - a boy who gets transported into an alternate world/time and needs to go back to his present time. 13 books (I think) in all - the series ended this year and it's really good (I enjoyed too)
Diary of wimpy kid - I got the set and DS1 couldn't keep his hands off those, I didn't try but it should be good.

We recently discovered Ali Sparkes. She writes good stuff (both in JS and J sections). Monster makers and SWITCH are 2 of the series you may like to explore. Her other books are very amazing too - I'm starting on Frozen in Time. Find that she uses good descriptive phrases in her writings and her storylines are good.

Also newly discovered is David Walliams. Some of his books \"Billionaire Boy\", \"gangsta granny\". Haven't tried personally but DS1 enjoyed one of his books - I'm planning to get him started on his other books.

          Hi hquek,

When reading these chapter books, do you ask the kid to read out word for word? How many pages each day? Do you finish one book first then move on to another book? Are they all black-and-white books?

I try to ask my 4-year olds to read aloud some parts of storybooks each day, but they are still only interested in those colourful picture books, although some can be quite wordy also. They enjoy flipping books at their own leisure time, but I know they do not read word for word when they are reading on their own, although sometimes they can tell me the story when i read alongside with them… They are not keen in those black-and-white pages books, even those with pictures (but no colour)…

Umm, for those chapter books, I don't ask DS1 to read out loud becos I assume he already knows. I can't stand the tedium of him going word by word in that monotonous way, and also he will probably want to faint if I make him do that. it's very bad of me although it's the best way of knowing if he can read. I only do that for picture books.

NOOOOOOOO, that list was what DS1 (2004 kid) read when he was P1. DS2 is still way behind in comparison - I only recently made him (DS2) read Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket to me for fun. DS2 can't handle chapter books (at least that's what I feel).

Actually for DS1, I started in late K2 by reading Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne, My Naughty Little Sister books to him. Each story is 1 chapter, so that's quite digestible. when I faltered due to tiredness, he started picking up the book to find out what happened after...and that was how he got started on independent reading. When he finished Winnie the Pooh by himself, I then slowly introduced more chapter books to him.

But DS1 is still young, so from time to time I will pull back from the thicker books and let him enjoy younger books just so he dun see too many alphabets floating around him. he still enjoy looking at the books I borrow for DS2.

                      My Favourite Present

Generally it will be some topic that most, if not all, students can relate to personally. For TNS, there were a few suggested topics to pick from.

has anyone said "My favourite book"? DS1 had to do it this year in P1 (chinese show & tell).
