what are common topics pupils talk about, besides ‘Introduce myself, my family, my favorite toy’ ? -

When reading these chapter books, do you ask the kid to read out word for word? How many pages each day? Do you finish one book first then move on to another book? Are they all black-and-white books?
I try to ask my 4-year olds to read aloud some parts of storybooks each day, but they are still only interested in those colourful picture books, although some can be quite wordy also. They enjoy flipping books at their own leisure time, but I know they do not read word for word when they are reading on their own, although sometimes they can tell me the story when i read alongside with them… They are not keen in those black-and-white pages books, even those with pictures (but no colour)… -

Umm, for those chapter books, I don't ask DS1 to read out loud becos I assume he already knows. I can't stand the tedium of him going word by word in that monotonous way, and also he will probably want to faint if I make him do that. it's very bad of me although it's the best way of knowing if he can read. I only do that for picture books.Hi hquek,

NOOOOOOOO, that list was what DS1 (2004 kid) read when he was P1. DS2 is still way behind in comparison - I only recently made him (DS2) read Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket to me for fun. DS2 can't handle chapter books (at least that's what I feel).
Actually for DS1, I started in late K2 by reading Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne, My Naughty Little Sister books to him. Each story is 1 chapter, so that's quite digestible. when I faltered due to tiredness, he started picking up the book to find out what happened after...and that was how he got started on independent reading. When he finished Winnie the Pooh by himself, I then slowly introduced more chapter books to him.
But DS1 is still young, so from time to time I will pull back from the thicker books and let him enjoy younger books just so he dun see too many alphabets floating around him. he still enjoy looking at the books I borrow for DS2. -

Generally it will be some topic that most, if not all, students can relate to personally. For TNS, there were a few suggested topics to pick from. -
has anyone said "My favourite book"? DS1 had to do it this year in P1 (chinese show & tell).
