2009 GEP Screening And Selection

My kid again said the tests are difficult. And she used the word 'super duper' again.


Usually I get worried when she says a test is easy or difficult. My experience with children tells me that I should worry when they tell me that it's easy. With my own kid, the same applies. But she has quite an accurate gauge of her ability to do the papers. When she says it's difficult, she doesn't do well. She even said that she probably failed the test.

She was so nervous she shook her tooth, which according to her was a molar. And the tooth dropped out, causing 'lots of blood' to be on the table.

The teacher threw away her tooth.

I was just glad that she could get through the first round. I didn't have high hopes for the second round. The only reason I had hoped that she could get into the gep was so that she could get into her dream school and doesn't need me to pay the $300 monthly school fees.

Sounds like quite an exciting day for your dd with her tooth falling out in the middle of the GEP test. Take heart. Getting into GEP doesn't guarantee her a place in her dream secondary school. And anyway, she can always get in via her PSLE results and still be entitled to the EESIS scholarship. Good luck!

If your child is able to have RGS in the list of options, then HCI cannot be 2nd choice already.

Both dd and her friend said the Math paper was tough and GA was easy, even easier than yesterday's. The top boy in their class said the Math was a piece of cake. For Math, apparently a number of students didn't manage to finish all the questions and asked for extra time, which was not given. Instead, they were all given sweets by the invigilator. :lol: So cute, even the invigilators realise they are just little babies.


On the whole, I think it was a positive experience for most of the students in dd's class/school. I was told they were all bubbling with excitement going up the bus, explored the school's premises (exam centre) during break time and chatted happily, gossiped about the \"habit\" of one of the invigilator and some even sang songs while in the bus, on the return trip. Like an excursion. :lol:

I'll be ecstatic if she gets 250.

What 'bus' are you all talking about? You sound like there's a bus specially to pick the kids up.

What 'bus' are you all talking about? You sound like there's a bus specially to pick the kids up.

oh moe has chosen a few schools to be the locations for students qualify for the 2nd screening test to take the test together unlike the first tests which was taken in their respective schools. So I think most schools will arrange transport to ferry their students who are going for the second test to the testing place and back to their school after that.. or alternatively the parents can send their kid there.

I don’t know why it’s called that but my dd said they give you some questions with answers to sort of help you get the drift of how to do your process thinking. No wonder some of them find it easy. She has a very good memory and told me some of the questions. I think for GA, even if the kid can get their answer, they may be wrong sometime because, the right answer is not so obvious. The math was tough but I believe for those who had spent alot of $$$ for prep lesson, they would have been trained for those tough questions. Also, for those whose are already practising upper primary math non-routine problems, it’d be easy for them too. My dd said that a boy in her class is already doing p6 math. He’s bored in class, poor fella. His mom is a teacher. Anyway, I believe my dd will lose out in math because of no training.

nowadays pri school students are getting more and more well/early prepared in their studies .... well I think the gep screening tests still able to screen out those who are real gifted and of course plus a few that are 'trained' for the test.

Assuming RGS or NYGH are her dream schools, she would need minimum 263 to get in via PSLE, so she would definitely qualify for EESIS. Anyway, it's still some years more.
