2009 GEP Screening And Selection
-
Thanks for all the comforting replies!
I guess he would not do too badly but I know he wouldn’t do well too for the "straight" PSLE exams.
Since P1, his results are always mediocre, some subjects are even bordering on band 3. It is difficult enough to get him to finish his homework, so trying to get him to prepare for tests and exams is near impossible. I had already given up pushing him.
That is also why I send him to a neighbourhood primary school as I can see the problems coming. Hahaha…even his kindergarden teacher thinks he lacks focus and motivation.
Sometimes it is a fine balance between letting them have their childhood or pushing them to achieve. -

[...My kid told me that half her class got thro the first round and some boys in her class cried when they didn't get the letter. I thought it quite sad. I don't know what the parents have been telling them.
Half is quite a big number, that is probably why the other kids got so disappointed.
In my son's school, only about 10+ out of the entire P3 got through the first round. So maybe it seems more normal not to get selected.
When my daughter in P2 asked me what is it about, what is \"gifted\" and so on, I have to give her a loooooong explanation to the term \"gifted\" and stress that the test is for only one kind of giftedness. I don't want her to feel bad when her turn comes in P3. -
When my dreamer boy was invited for the GEP prog, he promised us he'll work hard and we willingly got conned!! :stupid:

From my point of view, supersmart, is that english is the easiest, math was 2nd to hardest, and GAT was the hardest. I can understand u rating the english paper 2nd to hardest, the mcq and cloze were killer, esp. the micheal keenan mcq compre passage. Vocab was actually OK, because it was mcq.

i still can remember this q. It was fairly easy, compared to the others qs. For math, no kid in my class managed to finish the whole test. I did not do at least 8 to 9 qs.My boy told me the following question came out. Think it's the same question as last year question.
1 cat can catch 2 mice in 3 days. How many cats are needed to catch 100 mice in 30 days ? -

That is very sad. I hope that reaction was not the norm in most classes. 18 in dd's class got through round 1, so I can imagine it must be pretty hard for the rest. Dd didn't mention anyone reacting negatively though but then mine is the blur type. She only heard her name and nothing else.

Our kids seem to have similar reactions after the tests. Mine came home, rushed through her lunch and ran to bed with her Harry Potter. Last words to me were \"Don't disturb me for the next few hours.\" I was bursting, dying to know the questions.

Teacher complain to parents. Parents stressed. Begs child! Child unrepentent.
(this really happened to dd's former tutor. Teacher harrassed the mother and son repeatedly. Son consistently produces poor results during GEP tests but you know what, he still got into HC through DSA with only an interview).
