its been scientifically proven that breastfeeding is the best for the babies and our bodies! it helps us to maintain young with nutrients for the baby and for our body’s preparations. it also helps us to lose weight the fastest way. 🙂

Hi all experienced breast feeding moms,

I had just given birth a week ago, breast feed baby but stopped the last two days cause dr advised so, as bb has high jaundice level…now I am expressing milk. My questions are

I could only express about 40-50 ml both breasts. Is this normal flow after a week?
When flow is established how much can u express normally? I know everyone is different, jst want to know the average…
Which is more, express milk or direct feed?

                        Hi Nihauma,
From my own experience, after flow is established (ie. after one whole month of frequent sucking from BB), I usually could express between 80 - 100 ml of milk after 5 hours. Still, there must be direct sucking as well otherwise the volume will go down quite quickly in couple of days. The good news is, you can always build it up again - by giving BB more direct feed!

\"Which is more, express milk or direct feed?\" Mmm....this question tricky...shouldn't direct milk = express milk? 😉 Joking lah! For me, I think by feeding BB directly, BB actually drank more milk because he could suck more milk out. For expressing milk, I found that usually due to time-constraint or let-down not good enough, milk is not drained out completely from the breasts. So I will say that direct feed give more milk than express milk.

By the way, I am not one of those who have a lot of milk to the extend can \"stock-pile\" milk in advance! Rather, I found (and have come to accept) that my milk is just sufficient for one day. Express today, enough to feed for tomorrow. If not enough, supplement one or two feeds with formula. Managed to breast-feed my DS1 for 10 months this way and now with my 7 month BB, I am even more relaxed. I no longer pump during the day when I was working and will only direct-feed BB at night when I come back home and through the night whenever he wakes up. My milk rise and falls according to how much direct feeding he has. I am a relaxed BF mama this way, no stress and I don't beat myself about it.

                        Hope this helps!
