Hi all experienced breast feeding moms,
I had just given birth a week ago, breast feed baby but stopped the last two days cause dr advised so, as bb has high jaundice level…now I am expressing milk. My questions are
I could only express about 40-50 ml both breasts. Is this normal flow after a week?
When flow is established how much can u express normally? I know everyone is different, jst want to know the average…
Which is more, express milk or direct feed? -
I am a proud mother of breastfed babies

From my own experience, after flow is established (ie. after one whole month of frequent sucking from BB), I usually could express between 80 - 100 ml of milk after 5 hours. Still, there must be direct sucking as well otherwise the volume will go down quite quickly in couple of days. The good news is, you can always build it up again - by giving BB more direct feed!
\"Which is more, express milk or direct feed?\" Mmm....this question tricky...shouldn't direct milk = express milk?
Joking lah! For me, I think by feeding BB directly, BB actually drank more milk because he could suck more milk out. For expressing milk, I found that usually due to time-constraint or let-down not good enough, milk is not drained out completely from the breasts. So I will say that direct feed give more milk than express milk.
By the way, I am not one of those who have a lot of milk to the extend can \"stock-pile\" milk in advance! Rather, I found (and have come to accept) that my milk is just sufficient for one day. Express today, enough to feed for tomorrow. If not enough, supplement one or two feeds with formula. Managed to breast-feed my DS1 for 10 months this way and now with my 7 month BB, I am even more relaxed. I no longer pump during the day when I was working and will only direct-feed BB at night when I come back home and through the night whenever he wakes up. My milk rise and falls according to how much direct feeding he has. I am a relaxed BF mama this way, no stress and I don't beat myself about it.
Hope this helps! -
Thanks linden 2000 and desert wind for the useful link and input.
Currently depend on pump to keep milk flowing. Hopefully I can resume soon, and not till the liver has mature…in about a month! -

congratulations about your new baby.
pls do continue to express milk regularly. I also expressed milk even when i was breast feeding my baby.
reason was that i wanted to stock pile milk (as frozen breast milk) in my fridge before join back work.
you should expressess both milk breasts in one sitting. it is good to express the milk in the same interval as your baby feeds. this will keep the demand and the body will maintain the milk production. otherwise the milk production will reduce over time.
for me, i used to express every three hours and save the milk in the disposable breast milk covers (easily available in NTUC). frozen breast milk can be used upto 3~6 months after the frozen date.
do remember to label your milk packets with date and time of expressing. use the earliest packet first before using the packet with latest date.
Hope this helps. wish you and baby a very happy and healthy year ahead!
Note: try to express as much possible now as you will be able to produce lot of milk. continue to express milk until the milk runs dry in the breast and then go to other breast and follow the same. -
Hi Nihauma,
I'm sorry to hear about the jaundice! Thought I should share that while doctors used to routinely recommend that breastfeeding be stopped if jaundice is present at high levels, newer research shows that it's usually not necessary to stop breastfeeding. Here's some info that you might find helpful http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/bfhelp-jaundice.html
Of course, yours could be a special case, so best to check with the doctor.
Have PM'd you. -
I am still giving ebm to DS who is 15 mths old. He self wean when he turns one, just refused to latch and now looks at my nipple with disgust when I offer him. LOL. I have been comtemplating to stop and saw my supply dropped from exclusive pumping yet couldnt bear too after seeing all the posts on breastfeeding.
I am now expressing about 4 to 5 times a day and am too lazy to increase the frequency of pumps to increase supply. -
Just wondering, does any nursing mother take additional supplements like fish oil and calcium?
