Hi Holyaxile,
Would you like to share with me what was the compelling reason for u to choose nus high over RI? My child is facing the same dilemma. He likes both Math and Sci and scores well in both subjects. He has both offers. -

daisyt, are there opportunities for immersion and exchange programmes for students taking French as a third language? Thanks.I agree, to learn a brand new language, esp at this age of 13 and busy school schedule, is not an easy task. Beside that, 3rd lang is 3 hrs lesson straight through, once a week. It can be very tiring and dry. But I choose to believe, no matter what we do, if we put in effort, it won't be very bad. Even if one does not get the best result, its still a good exposure.
My girl (Sec 1) is taking French and intends to continue for next year. 3rd lang is included in the total % calculations together with the school normal subjects. She is scoring 70+ for the overall year and I feel, this is reasonable, with the amount of effort she put in. I still believe, she can do better and hope she would next year.
And yes, it was very demoralised to see your classmates drop their 3rd lang, one after the other. She was also thinking of dropping it before the EOY exam but I kept encouraging her to hang on for the good exposure and experience. As long as she studies, she won't fail. As long as she is not failing, it won't do much harm to her total %. -
turquoise:
I understand from my girl, yes, but in year 3.

The language center also encourge them to join international test/exam. But not sure about the details.
If one continues all the way, 3rd lang can be a subject in \"O\" level. -
Sry, I have no wish to dampen yur spirits, but I would advise people to think twice before they go for third language, actually, because it is very hard to cope with and most quit at about half year. But for those who continue to wish to opt for third language/is currently studying third language, jia yous ( cos receiving EOY marks soon rite?)
*Above is based on experience
Yeah I think you're right... I took up Japanese and I quit just before the June holidays because there's a lot of homework and tests etc. on top of school work, as if school work isn't enough -__-. If you don't work fast, you might not be able to cope with 3rd language... It is also quite time consuming to travel home from Bishan for me... especially if you're staying in the east like me...

Some of my friends also quitted halfway.
Sry, I have no wish to dampen yur spirits, but I would advise people to think twice before they go for third language, actually, because it is very hard to cope with and most quit at about half year. From news reports that I have read, let me give my comments;Hi Holyaxile,
Would you like to share with me what was the compelling reason for u to choose nus high over RI? My child is facing the same dilemma. He likes both Math and Sci and scores well in both subjects. He has both offers.
RI is a 6-year IP and take A levels at end of 6 years (RI may start IB program), then go into Uni.
NUSH is 6-year IP and will get a NUS diploma at the end of 6 years which is accepted for NUS to do Uni studies.
I tend to think that NUS diploma should be at least a diploma equivalent, so it should not be lesser than a poly diploma, right?
Interestingly, there is a trend that some bright O levels students go on to poly to get a diploma, so they will take 4+3 = 7 years to get a diploma. But NUSH diploma takes only 6 years, it can become a 1 year short-cut to getting a diploma? (only if NUS diploma is at least equivalent to a poly diploma, otherwise, why call it a diploma right?) -
James Ang:
An NUSH diploma cannot be the same as a poly diploma, lah. I'm sure any school can see what the curriculum is that leads to that \"diploma\". Different definition.From news reports that I have read, let me give my comments;

FYI, some IP schools also give out their own \"diploma\", eg. HCI., at the end of their 6-year programme. But at the same time, their students also take A-levels, wat. -
karmeleon:
Ha ha, are you sure HCI gives out their own HCI \"diploma\" at the end of the 6 year IP? Then it is not bad to go to these IP schools because at 18 years old, the A levels student can also say he/she has a diploma too and poly student only has diploma at 19 years old but without A levels cert. The word \"diploma\" may become \"abused\" if becomes too common and affect the real poly diploma. :lol:An NUSH diploma cannot be the same as a poly diploma, lah. I'm sure any school can see what the curriculum is that leads to that \"diploma\". Different definition.

How does the HCI diploma with A levels (or NUSH diploma) holder rank in the job market if the student decides not to proceed with Uni studies and chooses to work instead? Is he ranked above, the same, or below that of a poly diploma holder? Currently, A levels only is definitely ranked below poly diploma, and A levels holders skip first year but still do two years in a poly program to get a diploma.
End of the day, the practical Singapore will ask this simple question, \"This diploma is recognised by govt or not?\", whether HCI \"diploma\", poly diploma or NUSH diploma. A \"diploma\" that is not recognised is just false comfort for the holder.
How about I start a new thread to discuss this \"diploma\" issue, let the experts comment.
