I think DHS profile of students should consists more from sap schools. Afterall, they have the Tao Nan and Kong Hwa pri schs nearby.

But often, pple perceive that as if only pupils who are not eligible for scaling the Top mountain are found here .......
sound so pathetic after reading.... 🀷

What's the point of entering a high powered school and becoming a commoner?
It is like being able to scale the highest mountain but later develop altitude sickness and frost bite.
Being comfortable with oneself is very important and knowing one's ability is very important.
The important thing is the final outcome.
Sounds pathetic after reading some posts.....but my DD and my whole family is ecstatic that she made it to DHS!

Yes, it shd be a happy and exciting new journey in DHS
as it is still many parents' choiced sch, esp those residing in the east...... πŸ˜„

Your analogy is cute….... indeed appropriate.

From my observations, in SOME cases, it is the parents who relentlessly telling their kids
that they β€œdie die” also must enter what they termed as the Best sec schs and accept nothing else.
This might directly or indirectly making the kids feel much worse, inferior and with low self-worth
when they are unsuccessful in their 1st choice schs, even prior to start schooling in the posted schs.

Yes, some may argue that all parents want the Best for their children,
But have we think abt what is best for the parents may not be necessarily best for the kids themselves ??

****anyway, this is juz my personal opinion, no interest into any debating****

Actually, I'm excited that being in Dhs means my DS will be amongst the very excellent students those with 27x... If he were to make it to his dream mountain he will probably be amongst the slacker like himself. Hopefully by mixing with these highly motivated students, he will wake up and stop being lazy...
so is yr ds in 1K or 1L ?? (wonder is there any changes next yr)
oh....one cant afford to be a slacker in this sch...... πŸ˜‰
as even in the 2 SBGE classes, there were a few of them being downgraded to \"O\" lvl class this yr.
this yr, the No. of \"O pupils\" hit the highest.......

less kiasu liao:
I am ecstatic at dd going to DHS for an additional reason. My older children did HCL but as a subject to be studied and promptly forgotten after Sec 4. Now they are regretting it because they realise that it is helpful in their life after school. I also heard from a Indian friend that her lawyer husband has been taking Mandarin classes for the last 2 years. I was thus very happy to hear the principal actually speaking in Mandarin and the whole school so 'chinese'. All the students there that we spoke to spoke very fluent English though. I hope that with an English speaking background, dd will really be effectively bilingual after 6 years in DHS.

:xedfingers: about GP.........
haha, is the whole sch really so chinese ?? think esp the presence of the Confusicus statue πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‚
Most of the pupils are effectively bilingual even some of the teachers.
take for example my gal's HCL teacher,
she is able to translate fr chinese to english shd she find her pupils having diffculty in understanding her lessons.

The giants (257 to 275 last year) on our lower mountain already look so gigantic that I πŸ˜“. Hopefully dd won't :faint: before she is half way through. I have told her that her laid back ways have to change. Even my 'less kiasu liao' ways may have to change to 'chong ah' so she can climb up the mountain.

Btw, do we need to buy a laptop for them to bring to school?

Regarding abt the textbooks and notes, pl refer to the my posting below.
Augmum:
My DD got in too. queue for textbooks is so long, will get from popular retail. Heard some parents said that DHS will provide a lot of notes and homework, so no time to study
textbooks, in other words, dont waste money buy textbooks.
Can someone share whether this is true ?
Like to find out some admin matters. Can some kind parent share
a) what is the market rate for allowance for secondary school kids? $xx per week or $xxx per month?

b) are the DHS students issued lockers in school?

C) where to buy school bags for them?

Thanks so much.

Regarding abt textbks, let's me share with u all what i have observed fr my gal.
For Maths, u dont need the textbks.
DHS has its own compiled DHP workbooks.
In addition, the Maths teachers teach very well (at least for my gal's both Maths teachers),
u dont need the maths textbks, unless u wanna to use it for self reference.

same for science textbks. pupils are given lots of notes for science, esp Bio, downloadable.
if u want, u can used the science textbk as a backup.

as for Lit and history, amount of notes would depend on the teachers. πŸ˜‰
if u're lucky, u would get more notes than other classes.
but i suppose, my gal was not so lucky then....... πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‚

for geog and HCL, again lots of notes.....
geog for sec1 , gal said that teachers did refer to them, but not for sec2.

as for me, i did buy all the textbooks except for Maths textbk.

I am not sure abt yr batch in 2012, as for my gal yr,
she said that she proceeded to the hall on the first day and looked for the class ( u shd know yr class allocation by now ).

The canteen sells a variety of food, ranging fr $1.30 or so but ave food is fr $1.50 to $2,
Japanese food would cost more.
If u eat at the library cafe, it will cost more too......

U can use the same calculator as pri sch.

What kind of schbags ?? Mainly haversacks.....
Sch shoes....mainly track shoes with at least abt 70% white......
no ankle socks, but some pupils still put on,
when during \" inspections\" they will try to use all their might to pull their socks up ....haha
not too worry, these kids will know when to chiong or when to relax,
can relax but cannot too slack..... πŸ˜‰
generally, in yr 1, which they termed as \"honeymoon period\" they usually go easy......
but come to yr 2, they know they have to study hard, esp those classes with more intense peer competition.

market rate of pocket allowance ?? hmm.....i am not too sure,
as my gal will take the money from the container depending how much she needs.
i trust her totally ....as she would feedback to me as and when,
what she has bot and how much she has spent on food, or other necessities.

i heard fr other parents, ranging fr $20 - $30 per wk

yes, there are lockers avail, need to pay, think abt $10 per yr.
