I read your story and found very impress of what you are doing to your child. This should be considered exceptional parents while others send their kids for tuition or camp. Your son will feel more bonding with you and it will help develop self motivate for his further study.

I just came to Singapore and my son study in public school. He is currently except from Chinese but I am trying best to support him to know Chinese (but may not be for scoring).

My experience with my son is very similar to you. He was not good in Mathematic when he was P-1 in Thailand. I spent time to learn and teach him everyday rather sending him for tuition. I found many techniques to stimulate his learning and they are very successful. About 6 months after I started, he was able to calculate 5 sets of 2-3 digits number within 15 sec (no paper use). You can imagine this example: 15 + 59 - 35 + 154 - 68 = ... were read to my son and at the end you receive accurate answer back almost immediately. I was very excited and keep develop further by selecting good maths book, of course some of them are from Singapore and India. At his P-3, he managed to finish whole PSLE maths book within 2-3 months. He came to P-4 Singapore during term 3 and his Maths result was either full or almost full score. I am helping him to correct some weak points only now a day. During this long school holiday, he is now self studying Sec-1.

I do feel that your time to your son contribute more than just his Chinese. It will also motivate him for self learning and persistent in handling difficulty, like my son. Truely appreciate your sharing. I will try to use your concept for his Chinese, since we just start. I have no Chinese background but we can make it. When I told your story to my son, do you know his response? He said that we can do it. I hope every child to have this self learning motivation. Every parent can make it happen.

ppowanus… thank you for taking time to write me such an encouraging message. Wow! Your boy is really good at Math now! It must have been doubly challenging for you since your son was not even in Singapore yet at that time.


I so agree with you that there are other benefits to working with our children. My son and I are very close. Lately, he has begun to say "You are the nicest Mommy in the world." Not once but almost once every other day. And yes… conquering all these difficulties develops his threshold for failure, pain… and builds resilience and persistence. My son does not give up easily anymore… and he is no longer afraid of failure.

My DD is going to P2, but like all Kiasu Parent just trying to work out to source the best materials for her.

This is way too difficult for her. Try her on the P5 and P6 model compos from Popular. Go REAL easy!! Actually, I am thinking of running a 3 hour session at home to teach parents of little P2-ers how to do this without stressing out their kids unduly.

You guys have time so this can be more fun.

Attendance is child-parent pair. I can only handle at most 5 pairs at a time. Those who are game, please PM me. This service is free, but we must work around my availability.

For book... the publishers collate one every year. Why don't you wait and get the 2014 one when your DD is in P4? You can get from dang dang, the Chinese online book shop. There is something called Peeka too. I bought from dang dang before and got them to send to a friend in China. It seems that if you have an overseas address, they cheat you or something... I'm not the best person to ask because I ask others to shop for me. I dunno enough Chinese to shop on a PRC website.

well, I do have a tutor for my DD as I worry I wont be able to do justice to her..

But do make her do chinese assessment books or read + write compos from compo books which I buy for her.

I print the past year question papers and make her do it, but outsource the marking to tuition teacher (home tutor)

so far my DD is doing good. her tutor who is from china says her memory is good and she can score A* if she continues the way she is doing now. Just hope my DD will do well..long time to go to PSLE

about buying the compendium of compos, it looks difficult for me to order from dangdang as I cannot read mandarin :stupid:

I would really luv to attend the parent-child session. it will give a good insight to my DD about other kids..who are also working hard towards a good PSLE score.

Pls do advise me if you can let me join the session
