So, do you believe Hu Jintao leads a lifestyle of one who earns $11,000? Or do special privileges accrue?

because their pay is not everything. Their benefit package is much much much better.

eg in Japan, MP gets to travel FOC on their trains, MRT and even domestic flights.
Why don't offer d MPs these same benefits then! 😄
d people representatives can then feel d 'closeness' of their constituents on MRTs n forge a closer bond😉

When d late KGC had a stroke in London, d call came out to outfit an SIA plane overnight into a medical charter with accompanying doctors n nurses to fly her back. Does dat count as a special privilege arnot?

When she was admitted to a London hospital, d call (to d British PM no less) was made for her to jump d queue for a ward though it was well known then dat d British hospitals always hv a long waiting list. This was done. Does dat count as a special privilege arnot?

SG political leaders r still the world best paid despite d proposed salary cuts. D upward salary revisions in d two years following GE 2006 were more than d 40% discount now proposed after ministerial pay became a hot button issue in GE 2011.

This is clearly not a motion moved purely by public servitude, but a political move to recover lost ground.
3Boys said it was PM's political masterstroke. He is probably right in saying dat dis action will draw away much flak, but I think d real masterstroke is in trying to stem d momentum of d opposition.
D longer serving MPs before 1995 all enjoyed pension. IMHO, those who hv served d nation whole heartedly n unreservedly deserved d nation’s gratitude when they grow old in d form of a reasonable pension. By removing d pension scheme, it will likely discourage younger ppl from entering politics. D PAP has d GLCs to put their retired MPs or those who r voted out of office into; dis avenue does not exist for opposition members.

D swiftness in which d President n PM accepted d changes even before d proposal was debated in Parliament suggest dat d Review Committee worked within certain points of reference in an undisclosed brief from d top.
Thus I think dis political exercise is self serving for PAP.

Ex NMP Siew Kum Hong wrote about 2 main types of criticisms leveled at Ministerial high salaries.
              http://siewkumhong.blogspot.com/2012/01/answering-wrong-question-on-ministerial.html
He opined dat d criticism will continue since d political criticism has not been properly addressed.

Definitely. It sticks in my throat to this day, especially when LKY then came back and lauded our 'first class' medical care and how we needed to maintain our fee based system to maintain it, completely ignoring the number of poor patients who could barely afford their meds, let alone fly first class.

Not one of his more lucid moments and incredibly infuriating to me at the time.

But my point was whether we truly believe Hu Jintao lives on $11,000.....

whether there are points of reference given, your guess is as good as mine.

IMHO, since PM is the one who appointed the committee, it would be unthinkable, if he did not accept the committee’s recommendation like he did.

I agree. More likely, they already had a good idea of what the final form of the recommendations looked like, hence the rapidity of the acceptance.

Point taken. We would be naive to think dat d lat Kim JI lost weight only cos' he didn't eat well like his ppl during d famine.
