As in all issues, we cannot read it at face value. There must be a series of event leading to this. Flouting school rules is a no-no and if a reasonable timeframe has been given to respond, this would probably be the final warning. If there has been no warning then it might be a little harsh reflecting the teachers acting in anger just like how we parents sometimes pick up the cane out of anger instead of reason.

However I feel that the teachers might have also considered that the harm in hair cutting is not as bad as caning or other physical punishment. As a parent my first reaction might be anger especially if my child is a girl but I would still want the full story n if my child is really defiant, I would support the punishment.

While I certainly do not agree with the parent’s action, I do not think the punishment is appropriate. Even in the army where discipline is strictly enforced and there is a fair amount of recruits breaking the hairstyle rule, instructors do not take out scissors and start snipping away. Certainly there are other forms of punishments that are more appropriate and effective to deter students from breaking the rules.

You people don’t understand. Principal/Teacher also got family to feed, don’t think they like to risk the rice bowl.

I believe this boy must have given many warnings that the teachers acted and the boy must have struggle. Next time the teacher must video the whole process to protect themselves.

Maybe like what the article say, they should have Pro-Hair Cut professionals engage to cut weekly or monthly on fixed date to cut all that didn’t pass and give / video public warning, email / sms / handout memo to all parents as reminder to cover teacher’s back. So that they do not have excuse to call police, "comblame" (opps complaint) MOE, MP, PM, President, etc.

I believe students nowadays will be much worst that 10 years or 20 years or 30 years ago. I did part time teaching while I was looking job after Grad some almost 20 years ago, the student that time is already terrible, I give up after 1 month in the school, the principal somemore beg me to stay.

There are teachers who are bias …

Simply they take matters into their hands…
They are so sick of teaching… They lost their passion… They teach because of that rice bowl…
They must take a break form teaching.
I don’t pamper my kids but simply I still speak for human rights!
By the way, our system here have no human right la… So, what to do…
            Monkey see monkey do…

My personal experience. DD1 was asked to go her hair dyed back to black. She has natural brown hair (and still has) and her hair was even lighter due to chlorine exposure. When these were explained, the teacher said she didn’t believe and didn’t care. Her hair was not black and she needed to see all students in their ‘natural’ hair color.

Result? My daughter hated her and refused to pay attention the rest of the year because she felt the teacher was really biased and against her. Funny the teacher never called me and after that demanding week of scolding my daughter, she let go of the situation. Maybe she found out my daughter’s hair has always been the same color from other teachers. She never did apologize to my daughter if she did. (Teachers don’t know what is apology even when they make mistakes - imagine what etiquette our children learn.)

If she had cut my daughter’s hair in any style, she would have landed up in the court room. For sure. To some extent, at least for my cases, I don’t think I was ever an unreasonable mum. I have met too many teachers who went overboard with their self-given power. Overboard.

Perhaps they have met too many unreasonable parents that they have forgotten how to treat a child from a reasonable family properly?

If she ever complained to me, I’d ask her to apologize to my daughter first and then ask my daughter to do the same. I don’t want my daughter to think that one can abuse his power, because one day, she will be in a position of power, whether as a parent, teacher or in a society. Our children should not be bullied by teachers, so that they will not grow up becoming bullies.

so far we only hear one side of the story from his mom.

how about the other side, from the school itself ?

has the school already notified both parents and boy many times before - to have his hair cut ?

                  a) if No, then school should give warning first. give him a dateline. tell him that if his hair still not cut by the dateline, then school will cut it for him. otherwise, he can have his hair cut outside.

                  b) if Yes, he had been given stern warning a few times before but still choose to disobey school rules inspite of being warned and reminded several times, then discipline intervention by the school is not wrong.
however, during hair cutting by teacher, the cutting process must be gentle.

Country has country rules. School has school rules.

Typically the sch shld give a few warnings or inform the parents in-advance before metting out such punishments.

If didn’t, then sch is at fault.
If did, the parent and student is at fault.

So don’t be too quick to judge, or take sides.

                    Wonder what’s next?
A child makes police report when the parent mete out punishment?

                      Hi 2ppaamm,

If I were in yr shoes, I will ask a doctor to write a letter to certify that her hair has not been colored before and the swim coach to confirm her training schedule in swimming to result in that. Some things I would not bother to argue, let the facts speak for themselves and from the pros.

My niece’s parents were invited to hv tea with the P for colored hair and my niece was a defiant child so many kids with colored hair belong to my niece’s category. After repeated warnings, she just kept changing her hair colour closer to black but never black so finally got an invitation to ‘hi-tea’ w P. I asked her parents, "you actually gave her money to dye her hair so many times and never get the right colour?" "is your school that picky or what??"

I totally agree with this point as well. When I see a teacher bully, I would let the facts surface all but one has to investigate thoroughly.
