      GreenOrchid:
My son was very unhappy 1st day at NJC yesterday. He is from an all boys primary school and is very unaccustom to have girls (in fact so many girls!!) as his classmates. He feels really lousy and missed his boy friends from previous school.

Can parents who have sons studying in NJC advise how their sons cope with this situation? Thanks.
My boy (now Year 3) was also from an all-boys school. Make friends, lah!!! Usually the boys will hang around together after getting to know each other. They also board together on the boys' floor. Hopefully he will feel more comfortable in time to come.

Hi does anyone know if O level score of 5 points can get into Njc? I know the official cutoff indicated is 5 but just wondering the chances. I know for a fact that the cutoff for rjc says 3 points but hardly know of anyone getting in with 3.

Yesterday, I went with my DS for Orientation 2012 for Sec1. Below are my observations:

          1. From the Dunearn road gate behind the bus stop, student volunteers were stationed to guide the parents to hall. So, no wandering around looking for hall.

          2. Registration to get school diary, Curriculum handbook and Orientation booklet was quickly done.

          3. We were asked to stand up AFTER national anthem started. And once it finished, the MCs were silent, so we didnt know what to do. After an awkward 2 minutes silent standing, we were asked to sit.

          4. Principal and teachers marched into hall about 6 to 7 minutes late. And in one slide they said \"Punctuality is very important\". πŸ˜‚

          5. Presentation by HODs and others are good. But why, except the Principal, no one took stage to present? They all stood at front row below the stage. Those who were sitting at last rows could not see the presenters, can hear the voice only. Ofcourse the presentation slides were still visible to everyone.

          6. The presentation by Vice President of PAACT was interesting and the video he show on ISL was quite captivating.

          7. I registered as a PAACT member by paying $60, but told them I cannot be an active volunteer due to time constraints.

          8. The OGLs were quite cheerful with their OG students. I could see they easily mix around with OG students.

          9. PAACT arranged for a talk about the Migration to Sec from Pri presented by an external speaker/councellor Ms. Caroline in the Ngee Ann - Kongsi auditorium. Quite useful.

          10. When parents finished the talk and returned back to hall, we could hear a lot of enthusiastic sounds from hall and see the kids are enjoying some group performance.

          11. They asked us to bring some identification like ez-link card for student, but never asked for that. The 30$ orientation package, was given at end of the day. Some parents including me were wondering what this package is and how to get it. Some parents went to book shop asking for it and some enquired from General office.

          12. Overall I can give pass marks for the organising skills of JH group, but still there is lot of room for improvement.

          13. NJC is built like a maze, a stranger can easily get lost.

          14. One gentleman from parent asked a HOD or SO (in public), why NJC haven't produced a president scholar for a long period of time. The last one was in 2006 or 2009, can't remember, that too after a long gap of 9 or 10 years. I was eagerly awaiting for the answer and the answer given was interesting πŸ˜‰

          15. Some parents queried about minimum GPA of 2.0, if student falls below this they'll be transferred to another school.

          16. Some parents queried about third language program and CCAs, CAFE program.

          17. HMT is compulsory, however at the end of JH2, the school will revisit the suitability of student, if the student is not coping well.

          18. From the President's scholar board, I saw PM Lee Hsien Loong in 1970, Vivian Balakrishnan in 1980 and some current lady minister name and few more prominent personalities.

          19. In Top student of year board, I saw Ho Ching in 1971. Not sure this is PM's wife. πŸ˜„

          20. Current Principal Mrs. Virginia Cheng is serving the college since 2001, a long 11 years.

Very informative..:) I like yourpoint 4...:)

Since most of the programs are arranged or organized by the student themselves..I'm really ok with some gaps in between..
However..I do noticed that one of the teacher, mentioned about caught by surprises in 2 occasions..on the 30 bucks collection arrangement..and one more..can't remember..not sure if there is any teacher oversee the whole planning...or they just leave it to the student to handle totally?

                  - Ah, improvement already. 2 years ago, there weren't any student leaders at the Dunearn Gate to show where to go. We just followed the crowd, and there were LOTS of students walking in, so it was not difficult.

                  - Maze? Never find it so. Even my dh who was the \"chauffeur\" and dropped us at Dunearn gate and parked after that, had no problem finding his way around.

                  - Did they actually have a schedule with the timing for everything, eg. the teachers' march-in? During my ds' year, we could hear the commands from parade square and all the parents were confused as to whether that was meant for us! *hehe*

                  - GPA below 2.0. Yeah, they will be asked to leave. HMT, very few are asked to drop at end of Sec 2. Seems that those asked to drop HMT are just those with U
-grades. The rest are allowed to continue in Year 3 onwards.

                  - President Scholar Draught is probably the main reason NJC extended their programme from a 2yr to 4yr to 6yr programme!!! Bc all the top students got taken up by all the other schools that earlier set up their 6-yr IP.

                  - Of course Ho Ching is the wife of PM Lee. *keke*. You'll see their names on the Donors' Board in front of the school as well, with wife nicely donation less so her name will be below husband's? 😜

                  - Mrs Cheng even LIVES on campus!!! How convenient, yah? That's probably why you'll rarely if ever see the \"Principal\" carpark lot occupied (I've never seen a car on that lot). So when your children are in boarding, don't forget: \"The Principal is *watching* you!\".

Anyway, in case some of the new JH1 parents don't know, you can view the curriculum on school website:

                      Hi,

Thought i heard that it was mentioned yesterday that NJC started their IP in 2004. However, NJC started the 6 yr IP prog in 2009.

What does it mean by they start in 2004? As they conduct IP in yr 5-6? Don’t understand.

Appreciate if some kind parents can share on this

                      Thanks.

NJC started taking in students for their 4 year IP in 2004; ie students joined at Sec 3 and thru-trained to JC2. In 2009 they started taking in students in Sec 1.
