Actually 好朋友 is good for a regular read which some children are very lacking like mine, so it cultivates habits. Most sections of work are optional as it varies from teacher to teacher and the teacher does not even mark it. I see my child does it diligently because she likes doing it. What I see it helps is it just expands her characters bank unconsciously as she does it. I am not sure of its direct implication on exam but the love for the language by engaging in a regular material is helping her cope. For me as a parent, since the school insists on using it as a regularly distributed material, then don't waste it since trees are already killed for it. :rotflmao: -
If parents are unable to provide a conductive enviroment to the learning of CL, is best to avoid "certain type" of schools. That’s my advice when parents asked me.

From what I see in the past years top school papers, it is higher in standard for SAP school's Chinese paper(naturally so because everyone learns HCL until P5) but that is advantageous because at PSLE they take the same CL paper. -

For parents that need to make ends meet, yes, they can passed their kids to tuition or enrichment centres.
If you are mentioning those that are struggling to make end meets and cannot afford tuition or enrichment centres, I don’t think they’ll be accessing KSP whereby they cannot afford a computer and have the time or $$ to be online.
We do have the option of whether we want to teach kids ourselves. I have chose to teach them myself unless I really not up to the task. I do enjoy the process of learning though it takes up some of my sleeping hours. I usually plans and read when they are asleep. -

I would not like to subscribe to it but this is a must for my DS school, so no choice.
My DS don't like to do them and their teacher don't mark. I'm lazy to force them & also lazy to mark. I don't see my DS Chinese improve or start to love Chinese after doing them for at least a year. It works for your child but not mine.

DH dont read CL, me CL given back to school after so many year
but was pleasantly surprised DS manage a A2 in CL in sec sch .... :?
so he now need to scrap HCL .....yap in a Chinese
environment school which definitely help a lot ...encourage
the child to appreciate the language and the reason to learn it because
fellow student are good in CL ...
A2 in CL according to DS is only 10% of class , most got A1 in CL

Chenon, Chinese standard is low to SAP schools learners and high to non-SAP school learners so I suppose HCL is supposed to make that differentiation of a higher competency student in Chinese and that one allows one to upgrade to a SAP school in sec or remain in a non-SAP school in sec.
The same CL paper at PSLE is of low standard when done by SAP learners, but high when done by non-SAP learners? So, if DS is in a non-SAP school and doing badly in Chinese, he will do even worse in PSLE? If DS is in an SAP school and doing badly in Chinese, I needn't worry?

If I get your question correctly, my suggestion to you: take a look at your DS school's past PSLE performance in CL. The national % of A/A* for CL is around 80%. You can see if you should expect a more difficult or easier PSLE CL paper compared to what he is getting in school. -

Good for your ds! If all ang mo pai parents were to think like you, the issue of CL being too difficult to handle shall disappear. Actually, i had picked up this advice from a chinese businessman years ago.
Vice versa, those from predominantly chinese speaking families must aim to get their kids to potatoes' schools. That's the way to go! -

The school won't tell. I emailed twice during the holidays to know how many students achieved above 250. Nothing. I insisted. Someone replied saying that the info will be shared with parents in January. Only 2 types of pass rates were shared. My guess is that the school did very badly in 2011 and didn't wanna invite comparisons (i.e., minimal information just to be able to say they've shared).

Unfortunately, I was too blur to keep track in previous years. Now, I am REALLY worried. But it's ok. We will try our best and whatever will be will be. However easy the school papers are... at the end of the day, it is still my son's competence alone that counts. So, I shall stop comparing and just focus on what he can and wants to do. We've been doing that for the past 12 months and it has worked fine because it keeps discouragement at bay. We do have SAP school papers to work on, and we will work on those.
