So sorry to hear your gal's plight.
My suggestion is that you tackle on her emotion about going to school first.
Concurrently, you can work out something for her academic. It is already stressful for her on the acceptance of the new environment, so my opinion is concentrate on her emotion first.
As for spelling, i always believe that learning phonics is the way to it. It is not too late. Some programme within 1 month will be able to do blending given your DD age.
For word recognition and repetition, kumon is a much better option.
Sorry i can't say for hanyu pingyin because i did not teach my boys (yet). Maybe will never be.
I don't believe in tuition at such a young age. Personally it will only stress her further and may dampen her stamina in a long run.
May i know why kumon is a suicide option in your comments?

True enough, will take your advice and discuss with the teacher for better viable option. :heresmyfish:perhaps u can make an appt to meet with your daughter's teachers, senior teachers, level head, principal etc and seek their professional advice on what is the best course of action to take... i am sure some if not all of them would have encountered situations like yr daughter's case before. the last thing you want to do at this point is to panic and make your daughter feel even worse than she already is...
i think for a start you will have to work closely with your daughter's school ... at this point in time i think u would not want to stress yr daughter by signing her up for even more classes, tuiton sessions etc otherwise she will just have more and more negative feelings about primary school and when that happens it may be a challenge just to get her to attend school daily
i am sure yr daughter's school and its staff are the people who are in the best position to help you since they are experienced and must have experienced many similar cases before

Did your DD’s kindy teacher highlight any issues with regards to her academics and attention span? Did she have any spelling or tingxie when she was in Kindy?
If throughout her preschool years, she has not exhibited any major issues in her learning, this could be just adjustment issues. Work with the teachers and the school counsellor to help with her transition. -
If she studied in kindergarten then she used to it. How is she usually in her k2?
I think u can send her I can read. Its once a week and no homework.But it’s take time depends ur girl’s standard. I mean if she already know the consonants sound then she can pick up faster. Meantime she just memorize the words. Write a word ten times then spell out ten times. Then go to second word. My son studied I can read. But for spelling he always memorize the word. He never use phonics. Phonics help to read. So don’t get panic . She need some time to lean. Don’t send to kumon. They will give more homework.everyday their homework make her more stres and u cannot teach anything.
Please talk to her. Analyze. She used to has a small group. How is she usually? Socially? Best way everyday u check her homework and help her to do. Before sleep tell a story, she can feel safe. Talk to her. Sometimes they can’t tell u.explain her she will get new friends.it will be more fun. If she likes any particular CCA then tell her she can take and enjoy with her friends.

Environment . T also didn’t has patient . Then I encouraged with her dance . She likes dance. So I told her ur school has dance. I tried to find the problem and thought how to solve the problem . That time T didn’t give me any clues or ideas, though they are proffesionals. I let her to play with her classmates in the playground after school. She refused to play in the playground. I just patiently wait there with her for two months.Then she started to play but not with friend she play herself at the same time her class mates also played .after two months she started to play with her friends .
That time T didn’t find the root of the problem. And she made worse. She told me to tell my dd something like she didn’t do at school. First few days I rinsed her . I read in web. Cannot do like that it makes worse. After that T said anything I just say ok but i didn’t remind anything. I just help her to build her confidence and in her studies.
So believe in urself -
I remember when my boy was P1, for both chinese and english spelling, I gave him 2 per day. Kept adding new word each day. The last day before spelling will be revision. It works for him.

U can do it. Importantly, u don’t get panic, be patient. Explain her kindergarten small school. Primary school is big school .
Kindergarten has nursery, k1 and k2 only. This school from P1 to P6. A
Tell her she big girl already . "Wow u r so big girl now u r studying P1. Wow wearing uniform and school shools."
Everyday night asked her what happend in the school. Take this holiday as better oppotunity and visit any place like zoo with family. For me, I just concentrate in her social, I spend more time with outing.once they have the confidence the will pick up the studies.
Don’t remind her anything it’s makes worse.

after assessment, teacher will feedback to you immediately which level she should start from - is it mid elementary, intermediate or advanced ?
this course will teach her how to spell, how to read.
ask teacher is there any way to expedite her quickly, since she already P1 ? you show T the list of spelling from her school where yr girl can't spell. Ask T from this enrichment centre - what does she think where the problem of yr girl lies in, hence she enc difficulty ? T will advise you accordingly. ask T to give you some tips how you can help her revise spelling with her at home, help her at home daily. work with T closely how to overcome issue.
do not bring her kumon now. Kumon English only give her daily homework, but doesn't teach her how to spell. It is the phonics class that can help her how to spell.
concurrently, download a list of common sight words from Mrs Wong tuition website.
at home daily, you ask her to read aloud minimum 10 sight words (bec she P1 now). Once she clear 10 words, move onto the next 10 words. She need to familiarise common sight words, bec often come across while reading any storybook. Target one month's time clear all sight words recognition.
once she clear this hurdle of phonics, 2 terms later if you want to start her Kumon English, later then see. but for now, clear spelling obstacle first. -
Last year, my neighbour’s DD also had the similar problem like yourself. In order not to stress her, we just talk to her and get her to talk to us on how she can cope.
As for academic wise, I decided to help her mummy out by doing the phonics lesson with her DD on a daily basis. The reason I am helping her is because I really can’t stand the screams she put up outside my home every morning. Also I did not want my boys to see this and develops fear in going to school. Aniway back to my neighbour’s DD…within a month (because of her age and she has some basic background to the sounds), she knows blending quite easily and thereafter is is practice practice practice daily. I can PM you on what is the method I have used but I doubt you have the time and option to do that. So based on my experience with my neighbour’s DD, she can read readily and spell some easy words that is enough for P1 within 3-4 months.
So that is why I advise Phonics Lesson. So far, I have seen ICR (I Can Read) materials and I personally feel it is good. As what some KSPers mentioned, there is no homework. So it should be stress free.
If you find kumon classes stressful, I suggest you buy the Kumon Books in the retail shop and work with her on that. It should be less stressful bah. Kumon speeds up in word recognition in some sense because of repetition. You can incorporate the phonics into Kumon materials. Also kumon materials are colourful.
However, I feel that going classes (be it school or enrichment), you must really prep or have a heart-to-heart talk with her. Tell her that you want to build up her confidence and this is what you wish to do with her. Share with her your plans and get her agreedment that both of you need to work together. I guess this will reduce her stress somewhat. That is only my humble opinion.
BTW, my neighbour’s DD manages well about the second half of P1, after she has gain confidence in herself in reading. So I just want to prep you that it will takes time and patience on your part. But don’t let it drag for too long otherwise the mind wanders in a different direction and by then it might be difficult to do the patch.
The key is talk to her and get her approval to work with you together on a plan. -

I fully understand why you are panicking. I've a girl in P1 this year and 2 other kids in P4 and P5. I've heard of friends who went through the same situation like you before. Many a times, the common comments I heard was the preschool didn't prepare the child sufficiently eg. there was no spelling in preschool so it was a culture shock when the child had to do it in P1. I am not sure if your child falls in the same situation (you are in a better position to analyse). If so, it will be a uphill task but she is only P1 so don't worry you still have time to do so. I am sure you can make it with commitment.
There are 2 aspects. The emotional and the academic aspect. For the emotional aspect, I think it's important to let your girl feel that school is a fun place for learning and she loves going to school. Are there any subjects she enjoy? Eg. my P1 girl enjoys recess, going to stationery shop to shop, having PE and art lessons, etc... She also enjoys her new friends. These are things that make her look forward to going to school. So try to build on this. Work with the teacher to help your girl settle in. They must have a good impression of school.
Meanwhile on the academic, if your child has not been exposed to spelling or academic learning during pre-school years, it's probably time to really focus on it now otherwise she will struggle. Unlike another forumner who don't believe in tuition, my P1 girl actually started phonics and chinese enrichment classes since nursery, at K1 she also started maths and other academic enrichment classes along the way prior to P1. So I may sound like a kiasu mum but the thought is that if a child is \"well\" prepared, she will be able to enjoy school better as it's not a daunting task. My P1 girl would come back and say it's easy and just like K2 etc... and frankly, P1 is easy in the intial term (as there are alot of things they already did in K2) but things will start to pick up quickly.
I think you need to ascertain if you child is able to read in CL and EL. Eg. the high frequency words. It's not just about spelling. Spelling is only a small part of it. If the child cannot read well, she will struggle in other works as well. Note that there are learning support program in school to help children as well.
For spelling, we try to breakdown the learning. Eg. like another parent said, 2 words a day. In our case, we put the kids through phonics program since young. This will help them to decode words and help in spelling. My son used to be those who learn, know now and forget 1 min later.... :stupid: :slapshead: We can vomit blood teaching him how to spell. Fortunately he pick up in P1. So we would try decoding and also getting the child to practise writing the words. Practise writing also helps to improve their handwriting. My P1 is currently attending Lcentral. She started with their liftoff program last year and is now with their Success 1. The spelling words IMO is more challenging than school. Eg. last week, they had frightened, scary, etc... for spelling. So I would let her learn a few a day and on the day before test, revise through all words again.
For hypy, if you can't probably leave it to the expert. Eg. the current enrichment classes is touching on hypy. In fact, given that class has started, they have moved to chapter 3 or 4. I got the hypy (sheng mu and yun mu) charts from popular. It helps in revision. Once they are familiar iwth sheng mu and yun mu, the blending becomes a breeze even for words they are unfamiliar with.
Other than these external helps, the key thing is family support. Most kids strive on consistency. We put aside time every evening eg. 8 - 10pm where they must sit down together to do homework, revision, etc... This requires not just discipline for the kids but also the parents. Given her age, one of you has to sit down to revise with her daily. Overtime, you will be able to see results.
Note that going to enrichment classes with no family support is not going to yield much result. Parents need to enforce learning at home to make it effective.
On the part on either tuition or group lessons, this depends on the child learning preference. My kids hate 1 to 1 and prefer group as they find it more interesting and interactive. But depends on your child's foundation, a concern is, is she able to catch up given that most classes have already started for a while already. She might find it overwhelming and lose interest. So maybe 1 to 1 might be more effective at this point.
