            Hi

Saw some gd comments about her el tuition esp on compo writing. However, when I called her for enquiry, she didn't sound friendly and helpful. In fact, she sounded cold and gave me monosyllabal answer for every question I asked. I hung up after speaking to her in less than 5 min. Just wonder if she is a patient and approachable teacher. Does anybody who know her and whose kids have done well esp for PSLE enlighten me on her effectiveness and style of teaching? Is her compo class more suitable for weaker or high ability kid? Are her materials and worksheets gd and pegged at higher level compared to school?
Did you sign up for her class?

After reading multiple good reviews, I sent my child for lesson at Joanne Choo. Noted there are less worksheets and no homework unlike other tuition centres. She goes though the lesson and have students copy model answers. For parents who have children at Joanne Choo, do your children benefit from the classes?

                Hi,

My daughter has also started to attend the classes for P2 since this month. So far she likes her lessons and finds them interesting.

She just brought bk her compo's home and they definitely are interesting. She is also learning grammar which is actually difficult to teach at home.

Well how much she will improve is yet to be seen. My DD scored 90 marks in her P1 SA2. Hope she gains confidence especially for comp writing, as teaching compo's is not my forte!

Which class you child is attending at Joanne Choo?

Thanks for sharing. My child is in the P5 class. Unlike his previous writing class, he was given a model compo and the teacher taught vocab and highlight good phrases from the passage. Kids were then told to write a compo and submit for marking. Students are expected to do a draft two if there were too many errors in the first draft submitted. He was in the class for more than half a year but I did not see vast improvements hence I thought of trying out Joanne Choo. Testimonials in her website are convincing and I was told these were written by students during class.

Not sure if it applies to other schools, the school he is in does not allow students to take back their Paper 1 and were not told how much they scored for the paper. We can only gauge from the total score in the report book. I thought this is weird rule as it doesn't allow me as parent to view how he did for his compo which takes up a huge percentage.

Your DD is already doing so well but there is always no harm to prepare her for the years ahead. 🙂

for my P6 son, i have compared the model answers of the situational composition with Mrs Choo's and i find that hers is much more interesting and creative. i can't find essays as good as hers in the market. as for my P3 son, with the same composition picture, my son finds the same answer given in the assessment book so lengthy and out-of-point, hers is precise. when she writes she always insists that the children follow the picture. the essays are also very action-packed!

I thought you only have 1 son? :?

Hi, does anyone know of Joanne Choo’s credential? With due respect, the testimonials sound too good to be true. English is a language that can only improve over time unlike Math concepts and formulas. How could one who’s very weak in the English language, even failing the paper, pass with flying colours unless they memorised essays & simply plonk it in.

I understand from the various testimonials that many of those who had benefitted
seemed those who are very weak such thay any improvement thereupon would show drastically.

Would a child who is consistently in band 1 benefit from her teaching and go a further notch up?

Without seeming complacent, I have a child who consistently hovers around lower band 1 & higher band 2 and presently learning under a particular private tutor. She’s been with the same tutor for 3 years & yet her result remain more or less the same.

I am hoping to find one who is able to assist on this basis.

                      Any thoughts?

I would like to share my experience in Joanne Choo Language Centre, years ago..

Back in 2003, when I was a student poor in studies. I failed my English in school, getting a D7 (borderline failure) back in Sec school.
Joanne Choo did not look down on me. She accepted me as her student. She told me that I will eventually like English after her lessons.

2 months down, I really started to like her lessons. I payed attention in almost ALL the lessons. I liked her style of teaching. She did not only used words to describe, she also added in some form of actions.
I started to pick up more in her lessons.

In that year, I did showed improvements. I managed to pass my English at the end of the year for my English, getting a C5.
Back then, I remembered that passing English is mandatory in order to move on to the next grade. 😓

I still remembered, in Sec 3, there was once I topped the class for essay/letter writing in a test. Frankly, what I wrote in the test was the style I learned from Joanne Choo.
It was in late sec 3 when my hectic schedule isn't able to fit any more tuition, that was why I quit.

Eventually, I continued to practice writing on my own free time and at O'Levels, I passed with at least a C5 or B4 (I can't really remember). :?

                        -------

The learning there, helped me a long way. Even until now, I've been writing to forum letters and I do see that her style of writing (the sequence that should be written) did helped me in letter writing too.

This is my personal experience. Just sharing with people here. 😄
