      MummySTay:
The list of year 1 students selected for Math Olympiad training is out.

A total of 36 students altogether and equally represented by both the GEPper and non-GEPper classes. In fact, the most number of representatives comes from 108.

This ought to put to rest some parents' fears that only certain classes are given opportunities to shine. The truth is the opportunities are there, but then again, there are talents everywhere. So not being selected does not equate to no opportunities being provided.

Congratulations to the 36 girls and hope you do the school, your parents and yourselves proud! šŸ˜„
Congrats to the girls. šŸ™‚ And I agree with you, MummySTay, on there being opportunities.

why Y4 chemistry practical must buy own test tubes? thought the chem lab is suppose to provide and what is the lab assistant doing the whole day? washing and cleaning laboratories apparatus is part of her/his job scope.

I think the cost of the test-tubes is a very small price to pay in exchange for the life-long learning of responsibility (taking care of personal belongings) and independence (cleaning up after oneself). šŸ˜„

Besides, there are more than 50 classes altogether and preparations for the experiments would keep the lab assistants very, very busy indeed.

Really appreciate information from seniors in RGS who hv gone thru the CCA selection process.

If one is put on waiting list for one of the sports CCA but somehow still did not get in when the CCA posting is out, is there any room for appeal? Does anyone hv any past experience in this in past years?

Thanks, am really anxious and most grateful if anyone can help with any info

          Thanks!

Does raffles girls' secondary school offers SAT and AP tests to gain admission into ivy league colleges?

At the end of Sec 4, the school will encourage everyone to sign up for SAT, which will be held in January of JC 1. There is no subsidy (though you can apply for subsidy based on income I think?). As for AP I'm not so sure though.

And regarding to buying our own test tubes, it's actually because that the school test tubes are used by many people, and there may be possible traces of contaminants, which can interfere the results for the experiments, especially qualitative analysis, which is all about ppt... (and also because some people after using the school's test tubes don't clean them properly, and then just put them back into the tray, who knows?) So like it's much safer to just buy your own anyway, such that during practical exams you can be sure of your results:P

Anyway just want to ask where can you find the results of the CCA trials? Hehe I'm interested to see, but then apparently no one knows where it is (at least from my batch)

              hello everyone,

understand from DD that they are learning abt integers in class for math and that she is going to have a test on non-routine math questions in 5th week. Today, she came back with Math worksheet that covers combination and permutation among other topics. Appears to be coverage of math is wide and teacher in class may not cover topics in details. Now DH is her \"tutor\" for the time being...

I was wondering if the senior girls in this forum could advise whether there are any books/assessment books that DD can use as reference on her own ?

Thanks again for any advice šŸ™‚

oh oh non-routine math is not worth studying.

Anyone wants a scanned copy of last year's questions?(i bet some of you do:P)

Thanks choco05, DD was given a copy of last yr's questions by her math teacher.

Not worth studying ? Meaning no need to worry too much ???
Just curious, how do you and your peers prepare/study for Math tests/assessment at RGS ?

I just go through whatever i did wrongly before, or revise some old topics and things like that.

I personally find Real Numbers the hardest topic. Ugh. Haha i forgot everything about real number systems already. Oops.... :nailbite:

I see...so I suppose the teacher will give out worksheets on a regular basis for practise ? Sorry to ask so many questions cos DD seemed to be struggling on some of the questions on worksheets. Hopefully she will get the hang of it and do better with time šŸ™‚ Thanks !

actually non-routine is a lot about on the spot thinking and using logical deductions- and there isn't a fixed way of studying for it. to be very honest, it just depends if you are able to see the permutation there and then, but then the teachers will make it do-able. I have this classmate whose math is really really good. like 39/40 that type. but she got 0 for non-routine so yea šŸ˜•

your DD is year 1 right? year 1 math coverage is rather limited in the sense that a lot of things are linked like after learning algebra you learn how to draw graphs and etc (if I remember correctly- sorry I was year 1 quite awhile back).

hmm and with regards to what friendship said about the lab technicians- I don't think its very nice that you say \"thought the chem lab is suppose to provide and what is the lab assistant doing the whole day? washing and cleaning laboratories apparatus is part of her/his job scope.\" because while it is part of the jobscope, this is about contamination of lab apparatus which is unavoidable considering how we do our practical (hehe :P) and yea actually I'm very grateful for the lab technicians- they help a lot during like all our weird projects (especially Year 2- SIP, CSI) and cleaning laboratory apparatus is actually something we ALL do at the end of practicals because it isn't very fair to leave your mess for others to clean up (?)

yep thats all hehe. oh and with regards to my previous post about banding and all I forgot to include that like actually when you get to Year 4 you do get banded- one of the most obvious ones is Chinese, where you hear everyone talking about which \"ban\" they are in (there are 3- A, B and C) and there are others that are a bit weirder (?) too. like haha my class is banded for physics, and I hear of other classes banded for Chemistry and all hmm so justsaying.

hope everyone's having fun in RGS šŸ˜„
