All About Math Olympiad Training & Questions

attended a short seminar by MO trainer , was told that the MO talent is inborn.
The not so talent one may b can attempt 4-5 more questions with the training ,and this is how far they can go .
should we still invest heavily for our children for that additional 4-5 Questions ? -
How to tell if there’s or isnt MO aplitude?

I disagree with the trainer's views. The trainer's views is very superficial. Talent can be nurtured.attended a short seminar by MO trainer , was told that the MO talent is inborn.

Most important is to start young and make sure the students are interested. A good mentor is essential.
Tiger woods a natural genius at golf?
Mind you he started golfing before the age of 2. -
I too believe talent can be nurtured and the talented could be wasted talent without nurturing

Actually, I think math olympiad training could very well be a waste of money :moneyflies: and time. There are many good books out there about mathematics and mathematical olympiads. Some books consist of purely problems from actual competitions and their solutions, while many others have detailed explanations, techniques, and examples. Most importantly, they have problems for practice too. As long as you are willing to spend the effort on looking for these books, it will be much more worth it than training, because many of these trainers actually just take their teaching materials from these books. And of course, if your child is not willing to read these books, chances are he will not benefit from training as well.
Just my two cents

Hi,
My son got a silver in SMO Junior 2011 When he was a P5 boy. He got 106.5/150 in AMC 10B. His dream school is NUSH. But he did not well in NMOS 2011 because he was too nervous. He also got a silver in NMOS 2011. May I know how many percentage if he apply NUSH DSA? -
I sent my son to Kovan Maths Hub for their holidays SMOPS training. We were surprised that the trainer was very young & not very experienced. The front counter staff also did not give us proper direction & we could not find our way to the centre on the first day. We were told that the lessons will be from 1.15 to 3.15pm upon signing up. To our surprise, lessons have been
changed from 1 to 3pm from 3rd lessons onward without informing or checking with us.
My boy was 20 mins late on the 1st & 3rd lesson & I was 20 mins late to pick up my boy on the 3rd lesson. According to my son, his school Maths Olympiad’s trainer, which is from Interactive Maths, is more experience & gives better explanation. According to his teacher, Maths Hub’s trainers are undergrads who only work out questions & do not teach concepts. I think it is very costly to pay $350 for 5 sessions of group coaching conducted by an undergrad. -

You son should stand a good chance for NUSH DSA. Coming Hwa Chong competition result can also help to increase his chance. However, he might still have to go for their selection camp. Maybe, you want to go to their website for get more information on the DSS application. good luck! :rahrah:
