All About Kids' Eye-sight

hi everyone … we’ve been researching the web like crazy, read some books and spoke with some parents … worried sick … finally found this informative forum … you guys are awesome … really.


here’s my kids case (both high myopia):
DD (8 yrs) -2.5 (180 astig)/-0.75
DS (5 yrs) - 4.5/-4

me and DW are high myopes:
me (37 yrs) -8.7/-9
wife (38 yrs) -10/-12

we checked both kids (first decent eye check) last week … both with opthamologist and optician. pls don’t remind us why we did this check so late … its totally our fault … and yes … its our bad genes too. both kids love to read and draw … so attached to books … they watch moderate TV … no video games / computers.

our battle with myopia starts now. here’s the proposed plan:

1. we’re getting the myovision glasses next week. still contemplating reading glasses for evenings (i.e. myopilux max or basic reading glasses).
2. will monitor progress every 2 months with opthamologist and optician
3. will change after school activities (1 hour outdoors everyday), eye exercises and strict evening supervision
4. if there’s any hint of ‘power’ increase we will start with atropine (as suggested by many of you). will need your help with contacts and optician details later
5. more prayers and patience

This will change our working lives and daily schedules for sure … but aren’t these cuties worth it … we’re not hoping for myopia cure … only to control it … esp for DS.

Really appreciate ANY advise, recommendation and tips …

I’d like to know where can I bring my 3YO child for an eye check? Find that the kid will watch shows at an angle and a little worried about lazy eye.

I’ve called but they said all children below 7YO will be treated as private patients, regardless whether there is a referral letter from Polyclinic or not? Is this true? Would like to check with any parents with experience. Thanks!

I called KKH pediatric eye clinic but the wait was almost 2-3 months. I didn’t want to wait so I just popped into a private eye clinic (there are some at Mt E or Mt A). Costs about the same as KKH private patient. So really no point waiting for KKH.

Just want to tell parents out there with very young kids who have eye issues… Just go to the eye specialists directly. I have experience going to various pple as I was kiasu (I won’t mention names) and wasted money on those who are not eye doctors but claim to have strong experience with kids’ vision issues… the eye readings were scarily different.

I called an eye clinic. For the first visit, the fee will be $300 - $600 for seeing a consultant and above $500 for senior consultant as they have to do a series of tests. Subsequent visit will be $60 or more. :moneyflies:

Your fees are exorbitant. My gal saw a senior consultant as a private patient and did many tests too… only in the $100++ range for first visit. Be careful not to go for doctors who appear on TV / newspapers too often…
