      ...how to improve my girl's literacy skills in understanding Pri 1 maths questions especially Section C. She scored 0 for Section C in recent test but if I read to her she can answered all questions correctly!

      Sounds like that she's an audio learner - same like DD1.

      What I've done with her is to read the question out loud (ok, not so loud in the classroom context)...then translate to a \"subtraction/addition/multiplication/division sentence\". Then guide her to check - which is bigger/smaller? or who has more/less? Sometimes need to get them to read and interpret mathematically. šŸ˜‰

        Btw, if \"exchange\" means 1 for 1, that shd means that there is no changes at all right??

        I agree that exchange means 1 for 1. I used to exchange stamps as a child, and I definitely don't have increase or decrease in the number of stamps that I owned when I exchange !

        Why can't the teacher just say give away and receive ?

        It is definitely very important to make sure that kids can read very well before entering P1. But then if they encounter Maths teachers who write this kind of English, I will vomit blood !

          P2 Shaping Maths coursebook 2B: Geometry, page 125: The pictures below are made up of some of these shapes: triangle, rectangle, quarter circle, square, semicircle. Name the shapes in each picture.


          My younger boy has problems with such exercises. What can I do to help increase his understanding?

            My P2 son is very confused over the topic on "TIME". So far he is able to tell and write down the time correctly. He is also able to tell 1 hour / 30 mins before or after certain time. However, he starts to get confused when there are two clock faces with the right/left arrow in between and he has to fill in "Before / After". I get confused with the right and left arrow too. He is also confused as to how to calculate the difference in time. Any parent encounter this problem? What is the most effective way to explain this topic?

              It seems to me that the person who came out with this question lacks basic written communication skills and is incapable of presenting a problem clearly -- without causing confusion. I also find such problem with my child's school, both Math and Science. Maybe it's time MOE brush up subject teacher's communication skills ![/quote]'

              .... the teacher who set this qn is either trying to be tricky (which I don't think so) or got language problem. :siao:

                I can also exchange 1 duck for 2 chicken (if a duck is more expensive than a chicken).


                Based on my understanding, I believe

                \"She exchanged 56 stamps with Jonathan. Jonathan exhanged 44 stamps with her.\" is meant to be \"She exchanged 56 of her stamps with Jonathan for 44 of Jonathan's stamps.\"

                \"a) How many stamps did Jenny have after giving some stamps to Jonathan?\" is meant to be \"How many stamps did Jenny have after handling over the stamps to Jonathan and before she got the exchanged stamps from Jonathan?\"

                    ok.. then I think it would be more sound or more apppropriate to say' jenny exhange 56 with jonathon for 44 stamps...instead of putting it in two separate sentences.. very confusing and misleading :?

                      There were 6 cookies in each packet.
                      I bought 3 packets of cookies on Monday.
                      a, How many cookies did I buy on Monday ?
                      b, I bought 30 more cookies on Tuesday.
                      How many cookies did I buy altogether on both days ?

                      Answer to (b) ??? Can some one pls help on this ????
                      48 or 66 cookies shd be the correct answer ???? :?
