River Valley High School [*IP]

Facebook is going IPO soon and Mark Zuckerberg will then become one of the richest men on earth with 28 billions net worth.
There is this thing about entrepreneurer and innovative spirit. Is the spirit to try new things. Out of 10 things that one tried, maybe 7 end in failure, 2 moderately successful and one with great success.
If Mark were to be in Singapore, his Singaporean parents will most likely opposed his decision to quit Harvard university and focus on a strange business that allows people to link up in the internet.
You all see the point? RV is trying some new stuffs (ipad, but it really isn’t too new) and some parents are opposing fiercely. I see this as rather anti-innovative, anti-entrepreneurer spirit. With this kind of attitude, you are mostly likely only going to be mediocre. Drawing a stable salary your entire life, even if you think is still easy, isn’t so much of a achievement. In fact, it is quite pathetic. In this age, a spirit of entrepreneuership and innovativeness and condor in taking some risk is essential to be successful. A degree, amaster degree, a Ph.D degree don’t brings you anywhere. I see many Ph.Ds drawing a few K salary and isn’t quite happy with their work. -
It seems like there are people who strongly promotes RV, even using the prospects of making tons of $$ to "lure" ??
Sorry, I’m a parent and i’m seriously worried if this is the trend of Sgp’s education system.
Before anyone says that "you do not have to choose RV if you’re not happy with its system" , for the record, my boy will most probably not be qualified for RV.
I happened to be on this RV thread simply coz of the article that i read supposely from a RV student and it disturbed me. What I begin to read here from supposely parents’ comments and ‘advertisements’ here makes me seriously worry.
I’m no saint myself. But I’d like parents to really ponder about the true values that we want to inculcate our next generation. PEACE. -
Mistychances,
Not sure what exactly your concerns and worries are. Who are the \"people who strongly promotes RV, even using the prospects of making tons of $$ to \"lure\" ?? \" Answer is : None.
\"you do not have to choose RV if you're not happy with its system\" - be more discerning when you read articles, don't take things at face value, listen to both sides of the stories and understand under what context the sentence was uttered.
\"parents' comments and 'advertisements' \" - anything wrong with parents being proud of their respective children's schools and leave the children safely in the hands of the schools? Unless you advocate parents shouting and be rude to Principal or complain the school about this and that or create a bad name for the school by smearing its reputation here?
I find many people have double standards. In the RI and RGS threads, some parents there are so talented that they compose poems singing praises of the Raffles schools. It is alright to \"advertise\" the Raffles schools but for non-Raffles schools, \"advertisements\" cause you to \"seriously worry\"? Your logic, or lack of logic puzzles me a lot.
\"I'm no saint myself. But I'd like parents to really ponder about the true values that we want to inculcate our next generation.\"
We parents here are no saint ourselves too and you may deem certain of our comments not to your liking, so just read and pass, what have RVH or parents of RVH students done to make you think we are slack in inculcating values?
Mistychances, come on, we don't deserve this. -
pepper spice:
It is really a good news for all RV students and parents if RV really does it!Received letter from school for Sec 3 on revised CCA curriculum and 1-1 ipad programme. The gist of the revised-CCA curriculum:
The key objectives of r-CCA are to help students develop their interests and build up their physical fitness, instead of focusing on competitions and awards.
Students are allowed to start / join any CCA (IDP – Interest Development Program). ...... School will support these IDPs strongly and ensure that no student will be deprived of his preferred learning activities because he is unable to afford them.
Students talented in particular areas – school will provide avenues under TDP (Talent Development Program) to develop them to their full potential … objective is not to focus on competitions ....
More details will be given during the Principal's talk in March. Finally, RVH is leading the way in letting our kids choose their CCA/IDP based on interest instead of CCA choosing them to win awards! Hurray! -
mistychances:
Maybe, you are refering my mentioning of Mark Zuckerberg. As pepper spice said, you have to read it in context. I am telling his story to contrast our lack of innovative entrepreneur spirit. Not so much to emphasize the money aspect. But as we may know, wealth comes as a byproduct of talent put to good use, innovativeness and the condor to take some risk. facebook is not just about wealth, it touches many people lives in a positive way. Your success maybe measured by your positive influence in as many people lives as possible. Wealth is just a byproduct. Who doesn't want their children to be successful but this doesn't mean that we neglect character building and moral values. It seems like there are people who strongly promotes RV, even using the prospects of making tons of $$ to \"lure\" ??
Sorry, I'm a parent and i'm seriously worried if this is the trend of Sgp's education system.
In fact, like you, I am worry of the trend of Singapore education system. It is exactly for the same reason-the lack of the spirit to take risk.
For ipad, I see the school as leading by good example. -
mistychances,
the learning environment had changed and evolved with new approach towards promoting information and the translation
you need to get out there more often to grasp what's really brewing in real time
i fully agree with what pepper spice had deliberated
we need to progress, we need to move along ... -
Hi. Any idea if OCIP is a must? Any implications if a student doesn’t have any? Thanks.
-
Is it true that Dunman High and River Valley High field only girls’ teams for inter-school softball and cross-country competitions?
What happen to the boys’ teams? -

What is OCIP?
Dd signed up for peer tutoring (go to a pri sch to tutor the kids?) in term 2. She said she could gain some CIP hours.
I dont know the details.
In addition, the sch organises trips to East Malaysia and Indonesia (?). But we are giving them a miss.
