I'm at that stage now - we do own quite a number of C&L books, buds - coz the girls got hooked when they started watching this in the UK. (it's pidgin cutie English accent but very cute right? Only I think L whines a little too much).

CUTE as cute can be boy!
My girls can do a nice impersonation of
Charlie and Lola's character with the same accent. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Little Princess has a cute accent too.. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
      Andaiz:
DD1 started reading short articles in the newspapers (ST) when I read them on Sat mornings or in the evenings when I get back home. I only glance through the Money pages, and orbituaries in the morning before I go to work.

She also follows with interest the floods and typhoons in PH due in part to her other sensory skills overworking (see my other thread).
Us too. We never really like ask them to come sit here and read paper
kinda approach... when they see us reading the papers, they just scoot
nearer to see what the buzz and simply pick up one to read too! My DD2
started with the SALE pages in the different sections of the paper. DD1 i
think should be the comics part bah..

Yes, my girls follow tragedy features and those global natural disasters
and war effects and stuff. As both of them have helped me work with
under-privileged children before they are able to empathize & somehow
understand the sufferings of the innocent children involved in unfortunate
      tragedies.
      Andaiz:
To answer your question, rocklee, better to start with magazines and then give them bite-size of newspaper articles that interest them before showing them the full works (entire paper).
Yup, this should work fine, rocklee! ๐Ÿ˜‰

My kids also love to read Charlie & Lola tho i think they have not watched the cartoon before. ๐Ÿ˜„

I usually borrow the books from library. They can identify with Charlie and Lola as they are also brother and sister.

One English study centre i know, discourages introduction to the New Paper

mainly due to its content i suppose. The educators there recommended that
children be exposed to our Straits Times where the use of English they
considered up to standard for majority of the articles published.

I personally started my girls with children's magazines first as there are
relevant articles written by adults and kids in them. Some schools also
encourage their students to contribute to the school's news bulletin.
This i find, is also a good start to reading and writing newspaper.

              JMHO.
              Hi buds,
Can you elaborate further why the contents in Newpaper is not suitable for the children to read?

              Thanks!!

The study centre didn't really encourage it.

That is why i said i suppose...

                For example.......

There was once the New Paper published the big hoo-haa scandal on the
ex-PM of Malaysia with regards to a sodomy case. A boy who was then in
his early primary ages asked his dad what sodomy meant. The boy was
a fan of the ex-PM and followed the news beginning from his arrest.

That's when the dad was at a loss on how to explain it...

A recent cover feature was about the PRC student who took private
studies and was so called scouted from a sex-forum agent to appear in a
one time topless-car-wash event. Some were debating whether the girls
were scouted from X-related sites cos they offered sexual services. Our
children can jolly well google to find out more about such services if they
are curious. There are bad girls who can exploit good boys, just cause of
this curiosity. And unfortunately i have chanced upon quite a few sites
with teens and young adults offering such services.... foreigners AND
even locals alike. Yes, no kidding... our own local teens. ๐Ÿ˜ž
                It is sad, reali.

I'm supposing that the centre didn't want to encourage beginning and
appreciating the reading of newspapers with NP mainly due to the nature
of the many in-yer-face-scandalous articles. But if parents pick & choose
news-worthy articles in parts from NP, then it should be fine. ๐Ÿ˜‰

                  hi all.in.one,

Charlie and Lola DVDs are available from the national library - series 1 to 8. The books are quite popular and difficult to find.

BTW, in the past only premium members could borrow media items, now everyone is now entitled to borrow 2 media items - premium can borrow more.

Why not Readers Digest - a much better option I think.

Articles in there are much higher quality than newspaper reporting, and less the unnecessary media exposure like Bust Enhancements, or NTUC ad spreading 4 pages mid section

It is good to cut out articles from the newspaper for their reading - current and relevant. I wouldnโ€™t advise giving them the whole newspaper. My own experience with my dd is, she read lots of articles not suitable for her age or those that required adult clarifications, which she didnโ€™t sought. For eg she read about the tutor who had sex with his student, the ACS boys who claimed sexual abuse by their teacher, a few student suicide cases - I was shocked when I heard her talking about sex and suicide in a blase manner. Further probing revealed that she thought these were common acts, nearly as common as road accidents that she finds in the papersโ€ฆ
