PM Lee sends lawyer's letter to editors of TR Emeritus

HVR:
I agree. Taiwan is a different situation, there have been real overt issues pertaining to cronyism and corruption, and they perhaps feel extreme measures are warranted. I think it'll be a shame to exclude someone from high office on the basis that he/she is related to another influential, just for the sake of keeping up appearances. But don't you think we, as a country, will lose tremendous amount of manpower and talents if all the family members, siblings and relatives of PM should not work just to avoid or preempt 'rumors'?
From an individual point of view, I can't or I shouldn't work because someone related to me is the PM? Where is my right to work? Isn't this itself contradicting and against constitution? -
insider:
Well said.
This Mrs Ma got herself out from 'suspicious' position is a 'universal' model and not 'country-specific' lah; it's similar to those 'sacrifice' that some mums hv to make when deciding to be a SAHM to care for the family or to forego own chance of personal professional upgrading in order to coach the kids. No?
For HC, if she really holds her family (as a supporting wife of LHL in his political career) and Singapore at heart (LHL needs to rid himself of 'rumours' to win most people's hearts) and when she is in a position and putting LHL in a 'qian fu shuo zhi' position, wouldn't you think a woman in such a position may have to rethink about her 'position' as a career woman, wife, and a citizen to make some 'sacrifice'?
If she really retires, who in the right mind will think that her family cannot afford the family's financial needs and have to resort to corruption to fund those needs (if corruption has to happen in single income family, then those regular SAHM how?)
Mrs Ma's case is a good case for wives of politicians to ponder about...
I hope that you are not another 'literal reader' else it will make the exchanges difficult with probable stones flying...
d first order of business in many organizations wld be to avoid putting family members
in positions where there is POTENTIAL conflict of interest.
PM is cognizant of dis when he said he rejected a few times when her appt was broached.
Dhana is also cognizant of dis when he imposed himself in d reporting line bwt PM n HC to get her appointed as ExD.
But Dhana is not going to be between them when they r in bed, right arnot?
I m not suggesting any hanky panky here, but d perception dat it may occur must be removed fr ppl's minds.
PM acceding to Dhana's request cld mean we r really short of talent
or d top echelon of Temasek Holdings is a very sensitive position open only to selected ppl. -

Didn't follow the whole episode....why was the lawyer acting for the PM when the slander was on HC? She is in a high enough position to act for herself, ya?
Davinder Singh, Drew & Napier.
HC is not a lawyer by training. -

Yes, insider, I understand what you mean. But in this case, its not so much about HC being self-sacrificial, but about whether there is a potential loss of a talented individual (whatever what one may think of her ability). I think from the exchange between PM, Dhana (to the extent that it can be believed) seem to have dealt with the perception issue to some degree. Not say that ALL related to influential people cant work in positions lah, esp if those positions are held prior to that person coming into power instead of after.
Taking all other relatives of the Lee holding high offices apart, we talk about HC's role in LHL's political career.
If you were HC, what would you do as a wife? To head TH is a big thing but to aid LHL to continue with a higher voting is a bigger thing in my eyes or they are equally big? I just want to hear from others' point of view on this issue (no right or wrong answer like whether someone wants to be a SAHM coz is a 'grey' area).
I am on the fence on this one. Private companies can be quite a lot stricter on potential conflicts-of-interest than the g'ment tends to be. Unfortunately for HC, there is almost no job she can do in Singapore that will not to be perceived to have some kind of conflict-of-interest. -

HC is not a lawyer by training.
He is also an aggrieved party by association.
One of d consideration for d amount of damages to be awarded
in a defamation suit is how big is d plaintiff's reputation n
how much damage is caused to dat reputation.
On both counts, PM is greater.
Dat's my reading. -
