Optimistforum is in the UK. His kids study there. However, he tends to purchase local assessment books for his kids as he finds them much more challenging than the ones found in the UK.


I do not believe he intends to 'drill's kids into the GEP programme. Rather, it is for the purpose of exposing them to more mentally stimulating materials. Perhaps he feels his kids are able to tackle them.

Please correct me if I am wrong, optimistforum

To the other posters: I like the Singaporean books and education system, and so I use them as enrichment activities. Next year my son will enter for entrance exainations to some independent senior schools, and I want to test his cognitive skills - as the tests will test for these. Therefore GA tests booklets are what I am looking for.

I have managed to find GA books from Australia, which I have now ordered, and a website, which also contains online GA tests. They are prsented
below. I just happen to prefer using books from Singapore, and as I cannot really review the titles before I purchase, I tend to go on other posters' opinions.

As a matter of fact, I spent some years in the UK at one point of time and the nick is a reflection of my favorite season - autumn :boogie:

The forummers do have a point when they highlighted that a child shouldn't be drilled for the GEP programme. However, I believe some of the posters here may not be familiar with you, hence their conclusions with regard to your intention of purchasing the books.

There are quite a few available in popular for both GEP Prep and existing students.


Yup..I'm referring to the last 3 books. Not all the qtns appear in the worksheet or vice versa. Only a few. At least it's a good revision book for them to recap for exam.

The Creative Series Maths do not have P4 or P5 books. The publishers of this series do have P1 to P6 Eng books, and you can downlaod the sections at the following:

GA qns usually appear in Round 2 of the P3 GEP screening tests, not so much of Round 1.

And these are the practice sections. After the sections displayed, the ones you do not see in your link are teh tests with assorted questions from each of the 13 sections.

PS to KSP, which Maths books would you recommend? I wonder if the Maths 2 and 3 Creative Series would be useful. Please give me your thoughts?

I have uncovered two other publications: Test Your Reasoning (Robert Gibson, 1987) and Test Your Intelligence (Archibald Kitto-Jones, 1982). I have reviewed them and they would be useful for GEP Part 2.

Both titles are from the same suite of educational books published by the publishers of First Aid in English; they are therefore robust and useful tests for those transferring to secondary schools.

They are out of print and can be bought from e-bay and Amazon. They do not come with answers, but I also possess the published answer booklets. I can scan and email these to whomever needs copies.

Bright 9 year olds get tuition to ace Gifted Screening Tests.\"

Parents desperate to get their children into the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) are turning to tuition centres that claim they can help bright nine-year-olds ace the screening test. A growing number of enrichment centres are offering these classes at monthly fees of between $200 and $1,000.

…Mr Kelvin Ong, 36, went from being a GEP student to a GEP teacher before he quit to start his tuition agency, AristoCare. He decides whether to accept a pupil only after a month of lessons which cost $1,000.…He has even started GEP ‘foundation classes’ for kindergarten pupils, priced at $600 a month.

At Doctor Peh Associates, a 10-year-old outfit started by Mr Allen Peh – who does not have a doctorate – children who want to sign up for the ‘GEP clinic’ must have English and mathematics scores above 90, while kindergarten pupils must have an IQ score of 130 and above.

‘If they don’t meet those criteria, the GEP is not suitable for them as their foundation is not there,’ said Mr Peh, 51, who has a science degree from the University of Toronto and an MBA from the University of Warwick….He charges $2,600 for 10 lessons.

Enrichment school Morris Allen offers an annual two-week GEP intensive preparation course in June, after selecting its pupils through an IQ test…. ‘With practice under pressure, and repeated exposure to the questions, they show significant improvement and become more confident in answering them,’ said Mr Scarrott (Principal). The fees for 10 days: $888.

Housewife Cindy Tan, 40, is among the hopeful parents whose children are attending GEP preparation classes ahead of the ministry’s screening test in August….’Every mother has hopes for her child. Since we can’t help him at home, we have to get some help for him,’ said Mrs Tan…Adrin, who scored above 95 in his English and mathematics mid-year exams, is getting help at AristoCare. He also has tuition. ‘He has the occasional tantrum but I’ll tell him to finish his homework and I’ll take him out for a McDonald’s treat,’ said Mrs Tan, who has O-level qualification.

What if Adrin does not make it to GEP in the end?
‘I’ll be very sad and disappointed – after all the money spent and we get nothing,’ she said.
