All About Full-Time Maids

We used an agency. According to the embassy regulations, if your helper has been with you less than 2 years, you cannot process the home leave yourself. The cost is fairly close to what you’d need to pay on your own, plus it saves you (or your helper) time from queuing.

\"The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) introduced today a mandatory rest day for foreign domestic workers.
Under this new requirement, which will apply to foreign domestic workers whose work permits are issued or renewed from Jan 1, 2013, employers will have the flexibility to compensate their worker with extra pay if the worker agrees to work on their rest day.
For existing foreign domestic workers, this new regulation will not apply to the remaining tenure of their work permit.
Some employers who have difficulties giving their domestic worker a weekly rest day, such as those with elderly family members, might be eligible for the new $120 monthly foreign domestic worker grant announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in his Budget speech.
This grant is over and above the existing $95 monthly levy concession enjoyed by all households with elderly members above 65, young children under 12 years or disabled members.
Minister of State for Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin said in a speech in Parliament today that a weekly rest day is regarded internationally as a basic labour right, and that local workers and non-domestic foreign workers already enjoy this right under the Employment Act.
He said that Singapore is among the few receiving countries of foreign domestic workers with no provisions for weekly rest days, and this regulation is also expected to enhance Singapore's attractiveness as a destination for quality and experienced workers.
\"More than just physical rest, a rest day provides the foreign domestic worker with an emotional and mental break from work. This helps to improve their productivity at work, and reduce the likelihood of management problems,\" said Mr Tan.
MOM's move follows a year-long review of the foreign domestic worker management framework, including a study of relevant stakeholders.\" -
My current maid indicated that she would like to go home after completing her 2 year with us. Will seriously brainwash my mum to consider part time cleaners. I dun think I can handle the additional complexities brought by the new legislation.
So far the ones I engaged all thrifty and all told me they dunwan day off (would rather save the money). Curious, does it mean that I dunnid to pay for her food if it’s her off day? And if the maid is on off day but dunwan to go out (to spend money), then how, act like she’s not around, or make her go jalan? -
So this means that working moms are the ones to suffer! If we give our FDW’s the mandatory weekly rest day, then the day we want to take some rest before the madhouse that is work starts all over again disappears…
Ah well…time to rethink on going maidless and having a PT job or being a SAHM… -

I don't think that works as an argument. Your maid isn't entitled to a day off but you are! I'm sorry but you chose to have children and they are a 24x7 responsibility. She is just a paid employee. So this means that working moms are the ones to suffer! And before you ask, my maid currently only has 2 Sundays off so we will be impacted by this change. Most likely I will have to pay her as I doubt she will want to take the extra days which goes against the spirit of the change but we have to suffer to protect maids against those who refuse to give days off. -
It's not about the children. My children, my responsibility has always been my mantra. My maid is there at home just to ensure that there is someone to pick them up from the busstop and feed them when they come back.
Having a helper help out at home during weekends means I have some time to myself, guess this will go out of the window. Guess I'll have to pay her proportionately to have her at home most weekends.nms1:

Effective from next year, and only applies to those renewing or starting from 1.1.13.
When the time comes my maid (if I still have one then),will be given the day off every week. If she doesn’t want to go out, that’s her problem, not mine. -
POA Teacher:
Yes, I also think if they dont want to go out (4 days/month), it is their problem. They should not expect the extra money. We can just provide them food. Currently I am paying $25 dollars for her off-day. It is not because I want her to work for me. I just want to save the trouble of wandering around and get into trouble. But if it comes for 4 days (next year), I am not prepared to pay and will let her take her off-days.Effective from next year, and only applies to those renewing or starting from 1.1.13.

HAPPYH:
Maybe we have to get used to the idea that they may be \"off\" but still at home. We can't force them to go out so in theory they could just stay at home and sleep all day, chat on the phone or whatever.

Remember that all these arrangements must be agreed by the maid. That’s what the newspaper say. Maid must agree.
