In old days, VS was the most sought after school after RI by the general public. In the 80s, the emergence of SAP schools have taken away the cream of the PSLE students. It affected RI for some years but RI was able to bounce back very quickly. Later, VS failure to obtain independence status allow schools like ACS and SJI (which were much behind academcially) to surge ahead too. The merger between VS and VJC in the mould of RI and HCI can only be good for VS.
In the old days, the other most sought after school was ACS. SJI was a close second
Don't mean to be rude but I have never heard of VS. Only after the setup of VJC that I know VS existed.. -

In those days, it was difficult to get into acs or sji even if you have good results because most of the vacancies are reserved for their affiliated primary school pupils, so it was not an option for the general public.klaaik:

Only 2 schools were mentioned by LKY in a recent Straits Times article:

LEE KUAN YEW ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CHINESE-EDUCATED AND ENGLISH-EDUCATED
Published on Nov 29, 2011
The Straits Times
This was why I decided to save the good Chinese language schools as Chinese schools switched into English as the main medium of instruction. The Chinese schools taught students to be bilingual, disciplined, and have self-confidence. The best Chinese schools thus became Special Assistance Programme schools. Over time, the English language schools like Raffles Institution, Victoria School and others have also become effective in teaching Chinese to its students. We have unified the system but in the process, also preserved some of the values and virtues of the old Chinese school system.' -
if my old memory serves me right, in to 70s and 80s, the "defacto" top 2 schools then were RI and ACS. Their academic rivalry were intense and most of the cabinet members were from these 2 schools.
Sorry, I also did not know of VS then. -
I grown up in the 70s in a kampong. I did not even know RI. All that I knew was 德明, 中正, 华中,。。。May be unimaginable to some of you, but it was true.

However, ACS was not really 'open' to pupils from non-affiliated primary schools.if my old memory serves me right, in to 70s and 80s, the \"defacto\" top 2 schools then were RI and ACS. Their academic rivalry were intense and most of the cabinet members were from these 2 schools.

The Chinese stream then was quite separated from the English stream. -

Was VS a Chinese stream school then? Maybe that,s why I have not heard of it during that period. -
Now, I remember someone at the Saint Nick vs Cedar thread mentioning she never heard of VS. I thought she was just being rude and arrogant. …so…maybe it seems to be true?
