Parent pays nearly $6,000 a month in tuition fees

Is there really a problem with our education system or is it more the mindset of the parents?


I put more $$ in my kids' physical activities like swimming and dancing than in tuition for them, and readin articles like these trigger a fear factor that I am not doing enough for my kids academically and it takes a lot of conscious effort to not fall into that trap ...

Now .. I am not so sure ... but my kids are happy, balanced in work and play. Should I be too concern?

I'm sure you're not the only parent who's concerned. Me too.
Should we do more, do less, do nothing?
I'll just take this as a reference on the future challenges.
Hope common sense prevail when it's my turn.

yes, same here. My DS only has swimming, church class..that is all :yikes: My colleague's daughter has it all, you name it, she has it, ballet, art class, Shicida, maths class, berries,piano, now wait list for the you know \"TLL\"...OMG...i hear also stress and pity the daughter and she is only in P1!!

okay, tell myself to take a breath, stop the panick buttons. I don't have to be the \"norm\" cause my boy is still doing fine..for now and for long, I hope! :xedfingers:

Could it be the case of primary school children who hv 8-10 tuitions n then in secondary school with more subjects need even more tuition to survive ? :imdrowning: The needs fr tons of tuition for this child likely to continue on until univ :moneyflies:

One of my husband's students scored 7 distinctions for his 'A' levels. Unfortunately, this guy, like his current course mates, also shows lack of thinking skills and initiative in his learning. Attitude sucks big time too. Hmm, maybe a case of spoon-feeding? Or exam-smart? :? Whatever it is, he's now learning what 'resilience' is all about. There is always a payback time.

The sucks attitude could be the result of over emphasis on academic result aka tuition craze while neglecting/no time for character n mental building. Seems some parents tend to forget that education is not only abt academic result, there r more to that...

Fortunately, DH still gets to encounter many who are humble despite having stellar academic results or backgrounds. All is not lost.

8-10 tuitions in primary school?!? :yikes: Which means 2 or more tuitions per subject? Whatever for??? One per subject is already more than enough. Imagine if the kid were to have tuition for all subjects in secondary school. 8-16 tuitions then???

Heard of mummies talking. One telling another that although kid in P4 scoring 90+ marks, could fail in P5.

It's very easy to clock up more than 1 tuition or enrichment for each subject. For languages there's main one and one just for creative writing. For maths there's the main one plus those that focus on speedy mental calculation, or logic type or the very advance maths. As for science, there lab type also right ? :rotflmao:

Seriously? I've heard of tuition for Chinese paper 1 and paper 2. But do you need 2 different tuitions for Math? Shouldn't the one tuition centre be able to coach effectively for all sections of the PSLE Math paper? And why would you need a separate lab tuition for primary school?

Frankly speaking, there must be some diminishing returns to over tuition. No wonder I see some top students who scored >270 in PSLE languishing in secondary school. Either they're burnt out from PSLE, or they can't handle the additional subjects in secondary school which implies even more tuition, or they've gone cold turkey from tuition and can't cope at all.
