I need help with the following question:

Mr Chua likes to swim. His colleagues like to swim too. (as well as)

Mr Chua as well as his colleagues like to swim

or

Mr Chua as well as his colleagues likes to swim

or

Mr Chua, as well as his colleagues, likes to swim

I always thought as well as means and.

Then how does it change when it comed to \"and\"

Mr Chua and his colleagues like to swim

the ans should be 'likes'- because when you put a comma after the subordinate clause/dependent clause. the first will take the lead so
Mr Chua, as well as his colleagues,likes to swim
we must put a comma after the subordinate clause that is in blue.

Phrases such as together with, as well as, and along with are not the same as and. The phrase introduced by as well as or along with will modify the earlier word (mayor in this case), but it does not compound the subjects (as the word and would do).

The mayor as well as his brothers is going to prison.

this sentence should be seperated by comma
The mayor, as well as his brothers, is going to prison.
is the correct way.

The mayor and his brothers are going to jail.

the word 'same' and 'similar' has different meaning too.

Its been a long time since we learned our grammar and rules..our brains may have rusted..so need more oiling again..

whenever my DD asks me something..I quickly go and check internet or grammar book..as I worry may be I am wrong :roll:

My DD already says this :oops: I just say, \"See, mummy is also learning together with you. Learning is really fun. I am enjoying it.\" She will keep quiet.

there is no such thing as a one method fit all in learning... especially in languages

language is best learnt from speaking more, listening more and reading more.

most importantly it is listening more.

and i think normally what the school teaches is enough.

i don't know what is the complete practice blah blah, but if you find that it is not working, then it is advisable to try another method

If your child still can't read and comprehend what he has read, it is really pointless for him to continue the \"EPH Complete Practice in Vocab, Comprehension, Grammar and Cloze\" or any other book. The best forward is to read alot of story books.

Have you verified with him why he didn't like to read?

I hope you are well. It is a long time since we have spoken on here.

DS1 sneers at reading but loves comprehension (MCQ and OE), as well cloze, but comprehension is my covert way of getting him to read. He struggles with wordy maths problems, which I put down to a lack of reading. I therefore play to his strengths as he enjoys the assessment books - as this bilds up vocab and comprehension.

As for reading material, I have bought him wrestling magazines as children like him, are into that. Oh well! I shall keep trying...... :xedfingers:
