Can anybody help me solve the following math prob? TIA. It is from CHIJ 2010 CA1, paper 2, Q18

http://i42.tinypic.com/pywpe.gif\">

Hi

There are multiple answers, 107, 119, 131, and 143.

The number of strawberries chosen by you in (a) will affect the number in (b)

Usually students will solve this question with “Systematic Listing”

A quicker way is to find the multiples of (4 and 6) – 1 between 100 and 150.

Best wishes

Thank you ver much. so will tell my son go for “Systematic Listing”. I do not think my son would understand 12u-1, but will try to explain to him anyway.

As for the following Math Q, I do not understand the solution given. Can anyone help to explain. TIA.

A group of boys share a packet of marbles among them. If each boy gets 5 marbles, there will be 4 marbles short. If each boy gets 4 marbles, there will be 3 marbles left over. How many marbles are there in the packet?

The solution given is as follows:

4+3/5-4 = 7/1=7 (there are 7 boys)
7X4+3=31.
I do not understnd 4+3/5-4 . Can anyone explain? TIA.
Hi

hope this helps ...

Hi, can anyone help with this Qn:

Ashley, Betsy and Carlie shared some sweets.
Ashley received 11/13 of the total number of sweets Betsy and Carlie received.
Betsy received 1/2 of the total number of sweets Ashley and Carlie received.
Carlie had 12 fewer sweets than Ashley.
How many sweets did the 3 girls share altogether?

Thanks

Hi YumYum,

HTH...

Differentiate the unit of these two case with 'parts and units' then you will be able to understand the solution.

As the total unit should remain as the both case thus 24 parts in case 1 is same as 3 units in case 2

1)3/4 of chelsia’s money is the same as 2/3 of benson’s money. If chelsia had $18 less than benson, what is the total sum of money of chelsia and benson?

2) There is a total of 620 apples and oranges at a stall. 3/8 of the oranges is equal to 2/5 of the apples. How many apples are there at the stall?

3)Daniel bought 75 pencil and pens. 3/5 of the pencils is equal to 2/5 of the pens. How many pencils did daniel buy?

Pl explain detail how to solve the prolems…Thanks in advance.

Hi

Q1. 3/4 of chelsia's money = 2/3 of benson's money
--> 6/8 of Chelsia's money = 6/9 of Benson's money
So,
Chelsia's money --> 8 units
Benson's money --> 9 units
1 unit --> $ 18
Total 17 units --> $ 18 x 17 = $ 306

They had $306 altogether.

You can use the same approach for Q2 and Q3.

cheers.
