I think the selection tests are inadequate. They test mainly English and Maths. What about students who are good at only of the subjects? What about students who are gifted in other subjects like science? Even Thomas Edison was bad at Maths!

It probably has to do with how these IQ-type questions are conducted, which are usually to test language ability, logic and math. From there they can gauge a child's learning ability and potential. It's not so much to test specific subject ability.

Although I can see the merits of the GEP, I think MOE should still review it from time to time, especially now that enrichment centres are claiming that they can prepare their students for the selection tests.

We can spread accelerated learning across many schools. Parents not need transfer their child out to a gifted school at 9 years old. MOE wants to convince parents that every school is a good school. Separating gifted students into special schools undermines this message.

Let's not generalize here, shall we? Not all parents help their children with their projects and assignments. There are some, probably the more kiasu parents. And possibly those who feel their kids need help in GEP.

I for one never helped my kid with her GEP homework, projects and assignments. I let her tackle everything on her own and she came out none the worse for it. I figured if she was going to reap the benefits of the programme it was best that she experience everything herself. She may not have topped PSLE nor GEP but she is doing rather well in secondary school now, having embraced the learning journey and its long term benefits.

Let's not generalize here, shall we? Not all parents help their children with their projects and assignments. There are some, probably the more kiasu parents. And possibly those who feel their kids need help in GEP.

Content is far more important than colour laser prints and lamination which form the presentation. Anyway why wouldn't a 10-12 year old be capable of printing and laminating their own work? Just because a child hands up a well-produced project doesn't mean he didn't do it on his own.

Jtoh, I totally agree with u. Some kids are perfectionists or simply savvy in project presentation. I hv come across a couple of them. These days, kids are not to be underestimated.

Yes, the creativity and artistic ability of some kids are amazing, far beyond their years. It would be a sad day if these kids have to dumb down their projects just so some adults will believe it's the work of a child.
