Singapore Sports School

Could you be a bit more specific in your question? The school's enrolment is about 110 kids a year. Additionally, each academy has a different number of students enrolled.
In such a case, if you're talking about even 1 out of 21 students (and are you asking about the whole academy or a cohort year in that academy?), it is already 4.7% of the 21. In this case, you're talking about 5 students leaving the academy, citing an alarming \"more than 20%\" when actually in terms of enrolment, 5 out of 110 is 4.5% of that cohort (if you're looking at cohort), but I still don't understand why it ought to be something of a concern, especially if the students have valid reasons for leaving.
For some kids, perhaps it's a case of them not being able to adapt to the boarding life of the school. It is rather regimented and disciplined, but I've seen in my sec 1 son a more matured and thoughtful habits setting in. Others may feel that they prefer more freedom in terms of daily movements and going home. Certainly my son complains that there are days he wishes he could just take a step out of the school gate - but that's just not going to happen. We allow him to go out every weekend with us, knowing that he just need that galivanting to feel 'normal' again.
If it is a concern about that particular sport, why not speak to someone from the sports school? They would be the best to inform you about the various programmes and training that that academy undergo and see if that would be beneficial to your child.
For me, I believe that it's my best decision to send my child to SSP. The small class size, the discipline he undergoes, the counsellors and focus on values and character-building - I really can't ask for more. In a normal schools, where enrolment will definitely be at least 400 students per year (10 classes), my child will only be a digit and known as 1 amongst 40 in the class. The other students in the school would not know who he is, unless he's a prefect or someone outstanding. In SSP, he's one of about 400-500 students; he's known to the boys of his house since he lives with them; he's known to his Housemaster, Coaches, Teachers, Mentor, Counsellor and even the Principal knows his name. It is a close-knit school precisely because of its size, and the multiple academic pathways only means that the students have more areas to be at their best. Opportunities are also open for students who want to thrive in the academics; and one thing is for sure - I don't have to harp on my son's schoolwork/homework because the social atmosphere provides that natural peer pressure for him to give his best in school. -
Maybe I am not so clear in my questions. Sorry about that.
My son is keen with the Golf Academy. End of 2011, was told the total intake for the whole Golf Academy in 2012 to be 21 students including new intake students. But in February 2012, the total students number shrink to 16. (That's mean 5 students left Golf Academy late last year. Pretty alarming to me as it is about 20% )
Actually, I am more keen to have information from parents in the Golf Academy. Any parents could advise. Thanks -
Hi, I'm sorry to reply only now - I was overseas, and I had only intermittent internet access.
I'm from the Fencing Academy, so I'm really not in a good position to comment on the Golf Academy. Nonetheless, because Fencing and Shooting are new academies, the enrolment this year has been bumped up to more than 100 - the usual size for SSP yearly.
The number for Fencing Academy is only 12 Fencers a year - and will only get fewer in the coming years to average about 10.
Actually, 5 out of 21 isn't that alarming - if the Golf Academy is Sec 1-4 (Fencing Academy currently has only Sec 1 and a few transfers at Sec 2), if one each student left from each cohort for whatever reason, you'll already get 4 people leaving. This attrition might have nothing at all to do with the academy, but personal reasons. Nonetheless, it's speculation, so the best would be for you to call up the school to find out more...
...or better yet - come down to the SSP Open House on 31 March and find out more in a larger group setting. You can not only speak to parents of current students, you can also speak to the students and check out the school's facilities at that. -
hello , im a ex student of singapore sports school. i stumble upon this interesting forum and found some reports to be some what inaccurate. thus i feel that correcting what is misunderstood is my responsibly.(THESE ARE MY OPINIONS FROM A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE) firstly, not all students attend boarding school. boarding is optional, and very strict . i noticed over the years boarding has became increasingly strict. (at least for the house that i was living in). boarding is classified into green, blue, white, orange and red. i know i know, parents will say ‘isnt it better to be more strict?’ . WELL, in boarding it is tough to sleep on time. the lights out time is 10.30. for many Olevels sec 4 or 5 students, they sleep at earliest 11 latest 1 or 2. it is ok to study pass 1030, trust me only a handful sleep at 1030 sharp. the rest are probably talking or playing with their friends.usually only upper sec stay up late to do homework. I was in the swimming acad, we receive hands down toughest training. lets say we say kids TRY to sleep at 11. Friends cannot sleep, therefore turn on lights play handphone. sleep interupted sleep at 11.30. next morning wake up at 615 to attend training, end up only with around 5 hours and 45mins of sleep. (THIS HAPPENS VERY OFTEN TO SWIMMERS) training end at 8. flag raising assembly at 840. Rush shower rush breakfast, eat little. rush back room change to shoes pack bag rush to assembly. bed unmade , slippers not on shelf table messy. next day scolded by boarding house master for messy room . we tell him no time to pack room, he say not his problem . repeat the whole process more than 3 times out of boarding possibility of yellow card for insubordination … Do u think this is very strict, ok, or not strict enough? i would love to hear opinions from parents. And for the record i am NOT DEGRADING THE SCHOOL’S REPUTATION . Im just stating facts, not all kids fit ssp. Most sports school students dont grow up to become ‘ROLE MODEL STUDENT ATHLETES WHOM ARE LEARNED CHAMPIONS WITH CHARACTER’ . Im not saying all have to, but most dont come up to be want they or their parents want them to be. And end up wasting their time going through hell training in sports school. The funniest part is that they let us sign a form saying ‘we promise not to post anything in social media sites or any internet sites for that matter that will degrade the schools reputation’ . That shows how insecure the school is . i can go on and on about food issues too . but i choose not to unless u guys are interested. do u guys think what i said make sense???

Sad to hear that you have such a negative experience. You are right, not everyone can be a \"Learned Champions with Characters\" and not all are suitable for a boarding life. I'm not sure are you the one who choose to attend SSP or your parents \"force\" you to. For my gal, she choose to so if she's not happy I am always ready to let her go back to the mainstream school. -
Just wanna check if the kid has history of eczema, are they prepare to allow the kid to stay out.
I don’t think they are gonna bend the rules and install aircon for her right. Then if that’s the case, can she go home on her own after lesson?
My dd wants to go ssp very much but that’s be’coz of peers influence which I disagree to her idea. -
canadataboo:
Usually after lesson there is free time before training starts. Training ends around 6 to 6.30. And there are also morning training which starts as early as 6.30am. So if she choose to not board, she'll have no place to rest before training and you have to prepare to send her in early every morning.Just wanna check if the kid has history of eczema, are they prepare to allow the kid to stay out.
