Singapore Sports School
-
hello , im a ex student of singapore sports school. i stumble upon this interesting forum and found some reports to be some what inaccurate. thus i feel that correcting what is misunderstood is my responsibly.(THESE ARE MY OPINIONS FROM A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE) firstly, not all students attend boarding school. boarding is optional, and very strict . i noticed over the years boarding has became increasingly strict. (at least for the house that i was living in). boarding is classified into green, blue, white, orange and red. i know i know, parents will say ‘isnt it better to be more strict?’ . WELL, in boarding it is tough to sleep on time. the lights out time is 10.30. for many Olevels sec 4 or 5 students, they sleep at earliest 11 latest 1 or 2. it is ok to study pass 1030, trust me only a handful sleep at 1030 sharp. the rest are probably talking or playing with their friends.usually only upper sec stay up late to do homework. I was in the swimming acad, we receive hands down toughest training. lets say we say kids TRY to sleep at 11. Friends cannot sleep, therefore turn on lights play handphone. sleep interupted sleep at 11.30. next morning wake up at 615 to attend training, end up only with around 5 hours and 45mins of sleep. (THIS HAPPENS VERY OFTEN TO SWIMMERS) training end at 8. flag raising assembly at 840. Rush shower rush breakfast, eat little. rush back room change to shoes pack bag rush to assembly. bed unmade , slippers not on shelf table messy. next day scolded by boarding house master for messy room . we tell him no time to pack room, he say not his problem . repeat the whole process more than 3 times out of boarding possibility of yellow card for insubordination … Do u think this is very strict, ok, or not strict enough? i would love to hear opinions from parents. And for the record i am NOT DEGRADING THE SCHOOL’S REPUTATION . Im just stating facts, not all kids fit ssp. Most sports school students dont grow up to become ‘ROLE MODEL STUDENT ATHLETES WHOM ARE LEARNED CHAMPIONS WITH CHARACTER’ . Im not saying all have to, but most dont come up to be want they or their parents want them to be. And end up wasting their time going through hell training in sports school. The funniest part is that they let us sign a form saying ‘we promise not to post anything in social media sites or any internet sites for that matter that will degrade the schools reputation’ . That shows how insecure the school is . i can go on and on about food issues too . but i choose not to unless u guys are interested. do u guys think what i said make sense???

Sad to hear that you have such a negative experience. You are right, not everyone can be a \"Learned Champions with Characters\" and not all are suitable for a boarding life. I'm not sure are you the one who choose to attend SSP or your parents \"force\" you to. For my gal, she choose to so if she's not happy I am always ready to let her go back to the mainstream school. -
Just wanna check if the kid has history of eczema, are they prepare to allow the kid to stay out.
I don’t think they are gonna bend the rules and install aircon for her right. Then if that’s the case, can she go home on her own after lesson?
My dd wants to go ssp very much but that’s be’coz of peers influence which I disagree to her idea. -

Usually after lesson there is free time before training starts. Training ends around 6 to 6.30. And there are also morning training which starts as early as 6.30am. So if she choose to not board, she'll have no place to rest before training and you have to prepare to send her in early every morning.Just wanna check if the kid has history of eczema, are they prepare to allow the kid to stay out.

Sports school only take in student thru invitation but of course one need to meet the cut off points set by the school. -
:frustrated: So ,what is the cut off point????

May i know how to prepare the child to be qualify to go sport school?
What are the needs and requirement? -

There is really no cut off point. Although it is mentioned that the minimum requirement is PSLE result must be eligible for express stream.
The main criteria is being good in sports. If your child has done well in sports in primary school or has shown to have potential to do well, you can always try applying to sports school. Your child will go through trials and interviews and then offered a reserved place.
When the PLSE results are out and your child is eligible for express stream - your child reserved place will then be confirmed. If your child is only eligible for N(A) or N(T), he/she may still get a confirmed place but will depend on many factors. It will depend on how good he/she is in sports and whether there is still vacant place in the school (there is a fix number of intake each year). It will also depend on how many classes of N(T) and N(A) the school decide to have.
For those who wish to do the IB diploma, there is a cut-off point of 230.
The students of the sports school have are very diverse PSLE result. I think there had always been a N(T) class every intake and some top student has >270.
Well this is my observation. -
