Is GEP really necessary?

Then parents will look for courses that will teach their kids to tell half truths and interview techniques to browbeat the interviewers. Additional business for enrichment centers. :rotflmao:

Was wondering aloud, If the gep tests are a good selection tools, how can the 'hothouse' kids take up the place of those gifted one, yes iq questions can be trained but those gifted ones somehow will still manage the tests n ace them unless there is a quota in gep then it will be a different story altogether. So let give those parents that desperate to get their kids into the programme some due respect too. After all we should respect individual choice. There is no right and wrong n parents being parents all have the best intention for their kids ...
urm, this is not abt whether we give those parents respect. it's abt how GEP is not abt \"qualifying\" through hot-housing, but just as a program to cater to those who are just naturally different.
it's not abt individual choice. it should not be. GEP is not a programme instituted to let parents CHOOSE to send their kids to special prep classes to \"train\" to be gifted. GEP is meant for children who are gifted without doing 10 year series of IQ tests. -
The purpose of interview is to know more about the pupil’s strengths and weakness and how the gep is going to bring out the best in him/her.
Such information can never be easily obtained from selection tests.
If a child is a thinker and not able to express his/her views to the audience, the child is just unsuited for the programme. -

I agreed with toddles' points.
If one will to analyse the performance of the very good 0-level performers that are admitted to top jcs, those who studied very hard just to keep up with the scores did not perform as well as those who know how to study intelligently. In fact these very hard working students are better off studying in other jcs.
Natural ability makes alot of difference in the final outcome. -
But I agree that interviews are more difficult to prepare for. How many of us do well in interviews?
In some countries, some kindies have high entry barriers too. Even toddlers must go through an interview to get in. -
Once a kid reaches the interview stage, its no longer a test of academic ability. The main purpose is to assess the kid’s other attributes that were not tested earlier.
That’s why in unis that’s such a thing as discretionary admission for applicants who did not make it thru academics but hve other outstanding achievements. -
I think no doubt there are pupils who attended GEP prep course and are selected for GEP. I also think there are pupils who did not attend any prep course and are selected for GEP.
1) Nobody know for sure how many GEPers attended prep course and are selected for GEP.
2) Maybe regardless of attending the prep course or not, those who were eventually selected will be selected anyway?
3) Maybe regardless of attending the prep course or not, those who were not selected will not be selected anyway?
With no objective data, we are discussing as if those selected for GEP are those who attended prep course, or they outnumbered those who did not attend prep course. No reasonable and satisfactory conclusion can be made. -
:goodpost: HVR, nice one!
Why do we want to fault parents that have deep pocket, besides the kids get to be enriched in the prep programme irregardless of whether they are selected .... Sour grapes :siam:

the whole idea is not to prepare. Is to make it impossible to prepare for.But I agree that interviews are more difficult to prepare for. How many of us do well in interviews?

So the kids can BE THEMSELVES. and if the interview process is conducted fairly by well qualified specialists, then they will be able to separate the wheat from the chaff.
