1. comes, because dust is singular.

2. hoped, because the sentence is in the past tense (\"attended\").

My daughter's teacher said \"intensely\" is used for heat. \"Intently\" is used for concentration.

While I can agree with \"intense\" heat, Webster's Dictionary uses \"intense\" for emotion, and dislike (bordering on hatred) is an intense emotion.

I'm not satisfied with the teacher's explanation, but I wouldn't fuss over it. My daughter maintained she would still use \"intensely\" if such a question appears in PSLE. Oh well...........

Let me give an example and we can discuss if it make sense. Do note that it is hard for me to explain why I choose 2.

During my school days, my teacher taught me to restructure the sentence and evaluate if it still make sense:
---
From :
He dislikes David _____________.

To :
He _____________ dislikes David .
(1) intensely
(2) intently


Will you choose '1' or '2'?

Why do we want to restructure the sentence this way? The objective is to identify if the meaning of the sentence is change if we place the same word either infront or behind the sentence.

Eg.
- I always run at night.
- I run at night always.


Back to the question, my gut feel says that 'intensely dislikes David' doesn't sounds right.

It should probably be \"David is intensely dislikes by Francis'

This is just something that I acquired long time back ....I will leave it to rest of the members to share and discuss.

Are you referring to a sentence made in the Active or Passive Voice?

But, I think this question calls for a transformation in that respect.

for what it is worth, I do agree "intense" can be used.

I’ve seen a lot phrases where intense is used to describe strong emotions, not just heat alone.
ah well, teachers do make mistakes too. They’re only human. It is a good practise for our children to question something if it seems dubious.

intently is right, the root word of intently is intentionally

the crux of problem lies with \"IN FACT\"

so it should read, '' in fact, francis dislikes david intently (intentionally) ''

that would explain why he always picks on david.
