S'poreans to get priority for P1 places during balloting
-
ngsc23:
Hi,I shared my experience last year at RGPS. At 2C, 42 vacancies 45 applicants. Out of 45 all within 1km, 7 Non-singaporean. So lucky that at the end of balloting, all Sin got in with 3 non-sin balloted out. So we see that there will be 10-15% vacancies up for Sin. Roughly translate to 8-10 for phase 2B and 2C.
Not sure what other popular schools composite will be.
How would one find out the \"composite\" of SC vs PR from say 2012 intake like ngsc23 did for RGPS?
I'm enrolling my SC gal into MGS phase 2B within 1km this year. Last year there were 35 available places in P2B, and 39 applicants. Does anyone know how many of those 39 applicants were PRs? How would I find out that info? Will the school tell me? -
Daddy
Is he trying to say Bishan schools are all the popular schs n only Jurong area got the not popular sch.... Please lah last yr top scholar fr Rulang Jurong West sch ok
\"Bishan resident and IT engineer Rakesh Menon, 42, who is from India and has a five-year-old daughter, said: 'We have no car. What if she can only get into a school in Jurong? Just because we are PRs doesn't mean we are not serious about staying here - we do want to stay and live here in the long term.'\"
Sorry to say... We have enough IT engineers...

Hi,
As the MOE website is "Undergoing updates…" but from above posts, PV is still in place?
Stay within 1km of Chong Fu but afraid the ‘within 1km’ is not enough for my son to get in so thought of shifting to near Gong Shang (hubby’s ex-school) to get better chance.
But if PV is still going on, if i do PV and plus living within 1km - does this ensure a better chance to get into the school?
Appreciate your replies and thoughts through PM as well.
Thanks in advance. -

My humble opinion is that the Govt has gotten this wrong.
I am a born and bred Singaporean, and I am saddened that we have forgotten our roots on meritocracy and encouraging social mobility based on ability. By discouraging PRs with this move, we are doing our nation a disservice! Let's not forget we started out as an immigrant society, and we will be weaker without talent inflow. The problems we face with non-Singaporeans are due to their poor integration. The best way to integrate PRs into our society is get them into our Primary schools when they are YOUNG!
If you look at the TOTAL number of places allocated in popular primary schools, the problem with NOT enough places is that there is an unlimited allocation for alumni. >90% of alumni who get in during Phase 2A live more than 1km from the school! And alumni often make up more than 30% of the places, and their numbers are increasing yearly.
There is no social equality here, because children coming from these established homes gets a free ticket into the school. At the expense of families who live within 1 - 2km.
With this new law against PRs, only a few more places are released for SCs. If only we were to CAP the number of alumni (e.g. to maybe 25% of available places), allocate the rest based on Phase 2B criteria, proximity, etc, we will have a lot more places available for both SCs and PRs. -
What happens for those who are doing voluntary work?. First all citizen volunteers (irrespective of the distance) will get admitted, then only look into PR Volunteers? Even if, PR volunteers stay within 1km of the school?

dont forget, phase 2b is also for clan/church, gr. but by going for 2b, you have 2 chances instead of just 1 which is at phase 2c.
if i am living within 1 km and school accepted my application to pv, i would definitely go for it. i rather try than not try. but plesae dont cry foul if you cant get in because it is spelt out clearly that being pv doesnt automatically guarantee you a place. all the best. -
phtthp:
For last year Tao Nan phase 2C, there were more SC applicants <1km than available places. So I don't think we will see a situation whereby applicants from all over Singapore try to ballot for a place in TNS. I believe it's the same for all the \"hot\" schs in Singapore?under 2C > 2km -
many SCs from all over SG (North, South, East, West) directions will fight for a chance enter Tao Nan, via balloting.
if is meant to be yours, is yours. -
You are assuming that they want to integrate - but how many really do? Even at my time, (I was from one of the top schools) where there were plenty of indonesians, they formed their own groups and didnt really hang out with us. As far as I know, none of them are still here. They have either gone home (rich indon families) or gone on to study/work/live in US. SG, was only a stepping stone for them - none of them sank roots here...

it is not as if pr are totally ban from attending local school.
they might not be able to get into the school they want at pri 1, but they can always ask to be put on waiting list.
if it is a total ban, then i would say it is a wrong move by the govt.
